Sioux City Explorers News Release
Sioux City...The Sioux City Explorers clinched the I-29 rivalry trophy for 2009 as they shutout Sioux Falls 8-0 Tuesday at Lewis and Clark Park. It is the ninth time in 11 years the Explorers have taken the prize.
Justin Nelson hit a grand slam home run in the sixth inning that broke up a scoreless game. It was Nelson's 11th home run of the season and it came off losing pitcher Noel Baca. Nelson finished the game driving in six of the eight runs when he doubled home two more runs in the eighth inning. Jason Colson added the icing on the cake in the eighth with a two-run double to make it 8-0.
The Explorers ended the night with 11 hits as Dustin Jones, Alex Llanos and Brett Mieras also had a two-hit game along with Nelson.
Trevor Fox and Tyler Meigs combined on the six-hit shutout, the fourth shutout this season hurled by the Explorers. Fox was able to pitch out of several jams as Sioux Falls stranded 13 base runners.
The Explorers will close out the home schedule with a single game against Sioux Falls Wednesday at 7:05 at Lewis and Clark Park. A fireworks show will follow the game.
