Salem RidgeYaks News Release

Lynchburg, VA (July 18, 2009) - Leading 4-2 in the ninth inning, the Hillcats were one-out from victory when Daniel Nava crushed a two-run, game-tying homer off Harvey Garcia. Approximately two hours and six innings later, the Red Sox broke the stalemate with four runs in the top of the 15th to sneak past Lynchburg 8-4. Kris Negron roped a double down the third-base line off Paul Mildren to score Luis Exposito and David Mailman, breaking the four-all tie. Che-Hsuan Lin, who made Nava's equalizer possible by reaching before him with two outs in the ninth, singled in Negron to make it 7-4. He then scored on Mike Jones' double that served as the icing to Salem's record-evening win. The Red Sox improve to 45-45 on the full-season, 13-8 in the second half.

Mailman led the Red Sox with four hits in seven at bats, while Nava and Jones each finished with three hits and two RBIs. Salem only scored in three of the 15 innings, plating two in the third, two in the ninth to tie it up, and then four in the 15th to secure the victory.

Red Sox pitchers recorded 19 strikeouts on the night, with the bullpen recording 12 of them in nine frames of work. After Eammon Portice struck out seven while allowing just two runs over the first five, four relievers combined to keep the Sox alive the rest of the way. The Cats scored a pair off Armando Zerpa in the sixth, but Josh Papelbon and Derrick Loop each whiffed five over three scoreless innings apiece. Kyle Fernandes earned the win to improve to 3-0 by hurling two shutout frames to close it out.

Lynchburg finished with just 10 hits in the 15 innings, with only Jose De Los Santos, Matt Hague, and Kent Sakamoto compiling multiple hit nights. The Cats went 2-16 with runners in scoring position as the Red Sox consistently escaped dicey situations defensively.

Considering the fact that 17 of the 25 players on the roster contributed to the win, the second extra-inning victory in as many days was extra sweet for the Sox. Although it took four hours and 43 minutes to complete, the triumph moves Salem two games ahead of Myrtle Beach in the Carolina League South.

The Sox and Cats reunite for the middle-game of the series at 6:05 on Saturday night, with Seth Garrison opposing Bryan Morris on the hill at City Stadium.
