RHP Terrence Engles (3-3, 3.40) vs. LHP Russell Young (2-4, 4.40)
July 18, 2009 -- 6:35 p.m. G. Richard Pfitzner Stadium - Woodbridge, Virginia Game #90/Home #42
TODAY: The Potomac Nationals host the Kinston Indians in game two of their three-game weekend series from Pfitzner Stadium tonight, beginning at 6:35 p.m. The P-Nats have won seven of their last nine home games since the start of the second half and are coming off a tremendous offensive display in a 10-1 win over the K-Tribe. Potomac is looking for their third straight home series victory with a win tonight while also exacting some revenge on Kinston who took two of three contests from Trent Jewett's club last week from Historic Grainger Stadium. This would be quite a feat considering the P-Nats were 0-6-1 in their previous seven home series.
Prior to yesterday's blowout, this series had been dominated by tremendous pitching on both sides. Kinston's staff had a team ERA of 2.81 in the previous nine games against Potomac until the P-Nats scored 10 times yesterday with eight of those runs considered earned. The first five meetings were all decided by one run with the most lopsided game coming on June 10 which ended in a 6-1 triumph for the Indians. Even after Friday's outburst, the P-Nats are still hitting .244 for the year against the K-Tribe. Kinston hitters meanwhile, have been silenced by the Nats pitching staff for the most part only hitting .220 with an on-base percentage of .320 in the season series.
TODAY'S OPPOSING STARTER: LHP Russell Young, 23, was the 28th round selection of the Cleveland Indians in the 2008 First-Year Player Draft out of Dartmouth College. Young made his professional debut pitching for short season Mahoning Valley of the NY-Penn League where he went 6-3 with a 3.38 ERA in 15 games (all starts) with the Scrappers. He ranked third in the league last season in games started and finished with 62 strikeouts while walking just 14 in 66.2 IP. He began the 2009 campaign with Low-A Lake County and made four appearances with the Captains going 0-1 with a 5.14 ERA.
The former Ivy Leaguer made his Carolina League debut against Lynchburg on May 1 and lasted 4.0 innings while surrendering seven earned runs on nine hits in an 8-3 loss to the Hillcats. After a slow start in which he was just 0-3 with a 7.36 ERA in his first six starts, Young has become one of the K-Tribe's most consistent starters. He's yielded just 11 ER total in his last seven appearances and has only walked two batters since the All-Star Break (a span of 24.2 innings pitched). He faced the P-Nats on May 18 and took a no-decision despite allowing no runs on seven hits while striking out three over 6.0 innings from Grainger Stadium. He was outdueled by Will Atwood and the Nats bullpen however in a 1-0 victory for Potomac.
