Lynchburg Hillcats News Release
Quality starting pitching from Seth Garrison and timely hitting through the first three frames sparked Salem to a 4-2 victory over Lynchburg at City Stadium Saturday night. The Hillcats will attempt to salvage a win in the three-game series when the two teams meet at 6:05 p.m. Sunday.
The Red Sox struck first with two runs in the top of the second. Mike Jones singled off Lynchburg starter Bryan Morris to start the inning. After Morris struck out Anthony Rizzo, Tim Federowicz reached on a force out that erased Jones at second base. Federowicz stole second base and advanced to third on David Mailman's infield single. Luis Segovia laced a two-run double into the right-field corner to score Federowicz and Mailman and put Salem in front 2-0.
Salem extended the lead to 3-0 one inning later. Che-Hsuan Lin doubled to lead off the third and reached third when Zach Borowiak laid down a sacrifice bunt that resulted in an errant throw from Morris, which put Red Sox on the corners with no outs. Daniel Nava drove in Lin with a sacrifice fly to left field.
The Cats got on the board in the bottom of the fourth. Jared Keel smacked a leadoff double and advanced to third when Erik Huber grounded out to Garrison. Eddie Prasch knocked in Keel with a sacrifice fly that reduced the deficit to 3-1.
The Red Sox answered with a run in the sixth. Morris surrendered a leadoff double to Nava, who reached third when Jones lined out to center field. Rizzo followed with an RBI single that extended Salem's lead to 4-1.
Lynchburg drew closer after Garrison left the contest following the sixth inning. Salem reliever Jason Rice plunked Matt Hague with a pitch to start the bottom of the eighth. Hague advanced to second when Keel drew a one-out walk. Huber delivered an RBI single that scored Hague and reduced the Salem advantage to 4-2. Huber finished 1-for-4 with an RBI in his first game with Lynchburg after being promoted from Low-A West Virginia earlier in the day.
Jose Capellan worked a scoreless ninth to preserve the victory for Salem and earn his first save. Garrison (6-8) allowed eight hits, but limited Lynchburg to just one run in six innings of work to pick up the win. Morris (2-5) was charged with the loss after allowing six hits and four earned runs in 6 2/3 innings of work.
Lynchburg outhit Salem 10-6, but committed three errors and stranded 11 runners. The Cats will look to salvage a win in the finale of the three-game set on Sunday night at City Stadium. First pitch is slated for 6:05 p.m.
