Neelin Spartan Girls to be Honoured

Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Brandon, MB. - Atom-Jet Group, in association with the Brandon Wheat Kings are pleased to announce plans to recognize the Provincial 4A High School Girls Volleyball Champions at this Friday's Western Hockey League game at Westman Communications Group Place against the visiting Moose Jaw Warriors.
Members of the Neelin Spartans, including head coach Kevin Neufeld, will be honoured during the first intermission of Friday's game, in recognition of their first-ever provincial varsity girls high school title last month.
The Spartans defeated the Mennonite Brethren Collegiate Institute Hawks 3-1 in this year's final and veteran member Alison Quiring couldn't find words to describe her jubilation after helping to lead the school to the provincial title.
"It means that history has been made and we are so happy that we have left our mark on the school," she told The Brandon Sun recently. "That banner is going to be hanging in that gym forever."
Neelin may be a AAA-sized school that stepped up to the 4A division this season and Spartans head coach could not be prouder of his team.
"It just means a lot to our kids to have that opportunity to compete at that level," Neufeld told the Sun "and being the number one team in the province is a real reward for their hard work."
November's win was the first provincial girls volleyball title for a Brandon school since Crocus Plains won back to back championships in 2008 and 2009.
The entire team will be on hand to accept a commemorative plaque from the Wheat Kings and Atom-Jet Group Friday night. The Spartans are the second recipients of the monthly award this year. November's winner was Bernie Chrisp. This is the ninth season that western Manitoba hockey fans have been given the opportunity to visit the Wheat Kings' official website and nominate coaches, volunteers, athletes and officials for this prestigious award.
Friday night is also Calendar Poster Night, presented by McDonalds Restaurants of Brandon and The Brandon Sun. All fans in attendance will receive a 2013 Wheat Kings' Calendar Poster. Tickets to the game, which will be Brandon's final home game before Christmas, are on sale now at the Keystone Centre box office, by calling 726-3555 or online at keystonecentre.com.
