DOWN BY THE BAY: Los Angeles Lakers two-way guard Mason Jones has been named the NBA G League Player of the Month for games played in January. Jones averaged a league-best 28.0 points, 8.8 rebounds and 6.6 assists in eight games for the South Bay Lakers. Jones and South Bay (6-3) host the Salt Lake City Stars (3-7) on Feb. 3 at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN+.
FOLLOW THE NORTH STAR: Raptors 905 head coach Patrick Mutombo has been named NBA G League Coach of the Month for games played in January.
Mutombo guided the 905 to a league-best 9-3 record during the month, including wins in four of its last five contests. An emphasis on defense has been critical to the 905's success as the team is holding opponents to 42.5 percent shooting from the field, the third-best mark in the NBA G League.
BIRD OF PREY: College Park Skyhawks forward Justin Tillman has been named the NBA G League Player of the Week for games played Monday, Jan. 24 through Sunday, Jan. 30. The VCU product averaged 24.0 points and 19.5 rebounds in two games during College Park's undefeated week. Tillman scored 21 points and grabbed an NBA G League season-high 23 rebounds in the Skyhawks' 127-111 win over the Delaware Blue Coats on Jan. 28.
In his third season, Memphis Grizzlies head coach Taylor Jenkins has his team near the top of the Western Conference standings. Behind Jenkins' leadership and budding star point guard Ja Morant, the Grizzlies made the NBA Playoffs last season for the first time since 2017. Jenkins spent five seasons in the NBA G League, where he served as a head coach (2012-13) and assistant coach (2008-12) for the Austin Spurs. The Griz- zlies have won 16 of their last 20 games and will visit the New York Knicks tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN.
On Jan. 27, Maine Celtics guard Denzel Valentine contributed a double-double of 23 points and 17 rebounds in a 138-126 victory over the Fort Wayne Mad Ants.
In the loss, Fort Wayne received a strong contribution from guard Gabe York, who scored an NBA G League season-high 45 points and added six rebounds.
Highlighted by eight points and seven rebounds in the fourth quarter, Oklahoma City Blue forward D.J. Wilson finished with 33 points and 14 rebounds in a 116-113 win over the Agua Caliente Clippers on Jan. 29.
Also on Jan. 29, Greensboro Swarm guard Joe Chealey netted 31 points and dished out 11 assists in a 115-108 victory over the Wisconsin Herd.
