Pensacola Pelicans News Release

Back in May, the last of the Naval Reserve Unit Navy Cargo Handling Battalion 11 returned home to U.S. soil for the first time in nearly nine months. During their time in Kuwait, they served as a support crew to the thousands of U.S. Military personnel involved in the war in Iraq. The unit, which included 31 soldiers from the Pensacola/Fort Walton area, will be honored this Saturday, July 26, during a pre-game ceremony prior to the Pensacola Pelicans game at 6:05pm.

Known for their community service and military support, Cat Country 98.7's Dana Cervantes and Brent Lane from the Cat Pak morning show will speak during the ceremony. Last Thanksgiving, Cervantes had the opportunity to travel to the Middle East on a 10-day tour and speak with the locally trained soldiers from Pensacola's Battalion 11 at Saufley Field Naval Base. She was able to bring the troops over 14,000 "Letters from Home" as well as give the troops the opportunity to send messages home to their families for the holidays.

"The Pelicans along with Cat Country are proud to honor these locally trained men and women who protect our country," said Pelicans General Manager Talmadge Nunnari. "It's a great way for us to give thanks and to show our support to the giant military community based here in Pensacola."

Only three home stands remain in the 2008 season. Party decks, suites, and group outings are still available beginning on Thursday, July 24 through Wednesday, July 30. Friday, July 25 is the Pelicans Beach Towel Giveaway and the Spitball Gang Mascot Entertainment Act will be at Pelican Park on Saturday, July 26.
