Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WOODBRIDGE, VA (MAY 13, 2010) - The Nationals got to Winston-Salem's bullpen for four runs over the last three innings and used great relief pitching to come back and beat the Dash 7-5 on Thursday night at Pfitzner Stadium. The loss snapped Winston's five-game win streak and ended Potomac's five-game losing skid.
Winston-Salem remains a game ahead of Salem for first place in the Southern Division after the Red Sox also lost on Thursday.
The Dash (23-11) jumped out to another quick lead after scoring in each of the first five innings. Ozzie Lewis drove in a run with a bases loaded groundout in the first to put the team up 1-0. Eduardo Escobar singled home a run in the second to double the Dash's lead.
Winston-Salem scored two more with two outs in the third off A.J. Morris. Jason Bour, who hit two home runs and came within a triple of the cycle the night before, tripled to center to score Luis Sierra. Drew Garcia hit the next pitch to right, bringing in Bour and putting the Dash up 4-0.
Potomac (15-19) finally broke through in the bottom of the third against Dash starter Nevin Griffith. The P-Nats loaded the bases with one out when Michael Burgess hit a light tapper back to the mound. Griffith threw home for the force out, but Bour's throw back to first sailed into right field. The error scored Steve Lombardozzi, who had been on second. Brandon Short's throw back to the infield was wild as well, allowing Derek Norris to score and halve the Winston lead. Two unearned runs scored on a play that featured two errors.
Winston-Salem got one of those runs back in the fourth. Jon Gilmore singled, extending his hitting streak to 13 games. After a walk to Seth Loman, Lewis brought in Gilmore with an RBI single to left to put the Dash ahead 5-2.
It stayed that way until Leroy Hunt (0-1) entered the game in the sixth inning in relief of Griffith. Hunt walked Edgardo Baez and allowed a double by Tim Pahuta to put men on second and third with no one out. Hunt then balked, scoring Baez and cutting the lead to one.
Tyler Moore followed with a game-tying double and moved to third on Jose Lozada's single. Boomer Whiting pushed Potomac into the lead with an RBI sacrifice fly to make it 6-5 Nationals.
The P-Nats added an insurance run in the eighth against Gregory Infante to go ahead 7-5.
Martin Beno stymied the Dash offense with 2.2 perfect innings to collect his first save. Clayton Dill (1-4) picked up his first win with 2.1 scoreless frames.
Hunt suffered his first loss. He gave up three runs on four hits and one walk in one-third of an innings.
The Dash is now 3-1 on its seven-game road trip, which continues on Friday night when it starts a three-game series against the Lynchburg Hillcats. RHP Stephen Sauer (2-1, 5.39) goes for his second straight win against RHP Mark Serrano (2-0, 3.58). First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. Fans can tune into the live audio broadcast beginning at 5:45 on www.wsdash.com.
The Dash returns to BB&T Ballpark on Monday night when it starts a seven game home stand against the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. Fans may purchase tickets for every Dash game this season by calling the Dash at (336) 714-2287 or visiting www.wsdash.com.
