Potomac Nationals News Release
The Potomac Nationals, trailing 3-0 in the four-game series and trailing 4-0 in the finale, scored seven of the game's final eight runs to come up with a 7-5 win over the Winston-Salem Dash Thursday night.
Second baseman Steve Lombardozzi was 4-for-5 with two runs and two stolen bases in the win. Reliever Clayton Dill earned his first win of the season by tossing 2 1/3 scorless innings.
Winston-Salem started the series finale the same way they played in each of the series' first three contests. The Dash posted runs in first, second and third frames, jumping out to a 4-0 lead. But the P-Nats caught a break in the bottom of the third.
Jose Lozada walked to lead off the inning, then moved to second as Lombardozzi recorded his second single of the night. Norris walked to load the bases for Burgess, who grounded into a 1-2 force out at home. But a throwing error by the catcher on an attempted double-play to first sent the ball rolling into right field, allowing Lombardozzi to score an unearned run from second. A second throwing error by the right fielder allowed Norris to score a second unearned run all the way from first base.
Just as Potomac narrowed the gap, Winston-Salem posted another run in the fourth as Jon Gilmore scored on a two-out RBI-single by Ozzie Lewis. But the three-run advantage wasn't enough.
Lombardozzi singled and crossed the plate again in the fifth on an RBI-single by Burgess. That cut the lead to two again at 5-3, just before the Dash bullpen imploded.
Leroy Hunt took over for Winston-Salem starter Nevin Griffith in the sixth and lasted just one-third of the frame. He walked leadoff hitter Edgardo Baez and surrendered a double to Tim Pahuta, putting runners on second and third for Tyler Moore.
Hunt balked, scoring Baez and putting Pahuta on third, then Moore doubled to right to plate Pahuta. Lozada singled to put runners on the corners, then Boomer Whiting hit a sacrifice fly to left to score Moore.
The P-Nats carried a 6-5 lead through to the bottom of the eighth, when Dash reliever Kyle Bellamy walked Lozada and fourth Dash reliever Gregory Infante gave up an RBI-single off Burgess that scored Lozada.
Potomac reliever Martin Beno earned the save by holding the Dash hitless through 2 2/3.
The P-Nats host the Wilmington Blue Rocks Friday night for the first of a three-game set at Pfitzner Stadium. First pitch is set for 7:03 p.m. Potomac took two of three from the Rocks April 16-18.
