Arkansas Travelers News Release
Springdale, AR - The Arkansas Travelers sustained one of their worst losses of the season on Wednesday night in a 15-3 defeat at the hands of the Northwest Arkansas Naturals at Arvest Ballpark. The Naturals scored in six of eight innings and smacked 18 base hits including 11 that went for extra bases. Triple Crown candidate Clint Robinson went 4-for-5 with two doubles to raise his league-leading batting average to .328. The loss, the Travs' sixth in a row, is their tenth by ten or more runs.
Now 7-22 against the Naturals, the Travs fall to 27-37 in the second half (53-81 overall). Northwest Arkansas extends their league-best record to 39-25 in the second half (81-53 overall).
Travs left hander Trevor Reckling (2-6) took the brunt of the Naturals attack on Tuesday surrendering nine runs on 11 base hits, two walks and four wild pitches in 5.1 innings. Over the first three innings, Reckling had particular trouble getting the third out. Each of the first seven runs scored by the Naturals came on two-out base hits.
In his last game of a Major League rehab assignment, Josh Fields drove in two runs with a pair of two-out doubles in the first and second innings. Robinson added two RBI singles while Eric Hosmer knocked in two runs with a double in the second inning.
Paulo Orlando put the Naturals up 7-0 with a two-out single in the third inning knocking in Manny Pina.
The only noise the Travs made came after Naturals pitcher John Lamb (2-1) retired the first ten batters. Abel Nieves and Efren Navarro singled, then Jeremy Moore drew a two-out walk. Charlton Jimerson swatted a double to left field clearing the bases to bring the Travs within a 7-3 score.
Lamb finished five innings for the victory allowing three runs on three base hits and a walk adding five strikeouts.
Reckling set down seven straight hitters until Orlando took him deep (11) leading off the sixth inning. After Reckling's fourth wild pitch allowed Hosmer to reach first base on strike three, Anthony Ortega was summoned from the bullpen and was ineffective allowing four runs on four base hits including solo home runs by Tim Smith (9) and Johnny Giavotella (8).
Robert Fish surrendered two runs in the ninth inning.
Time of game was 2:53 and the paid attendance was 2,965.
The Travs attempt to keep pace with Northwest Arkansas on Wednesday night beginning at 7:05 p.m.
