Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI - Erick Abreu provided dominant starting pitching and David Cook, Albert Cartwright and Koby Clemens drove in two runs each as Corpus Christi spanked Frisco 9-0 Wednesday night at Whataburger Field.
The Hooks improved to 27-38 in the second half of Texas League play and 63-72 overall. The RoughRiders are 30-35 and 68-66.
Corpus Christi sits five games back of TL South Division-leading Midland with five games remaining.
Abreu (4-4) threw just 70 pitches over seven innings, fifty-three of which were strikes. He allowed three singles and struck out four. The Dominican right-hander won his fourth straight.
Lead-off hitter Cook's 10th home run moved Corpus Christi to a 1-0 first-inning advantage. Cook drilled a 1-0 offering from Martin Perez (5-8) to the berm in left field.
Federico Hernandez' double sparked a three-run third as the Hooks built a 4-0 cushion. Hernandez later scored when third baseman Andy Jenkins threw away Cartwright's bunt single. Clemens chipped in with a two-RBI single to left.
Perez' struggles continued in the fourth; Jon Gaston belted his 12th home run on the initial pitch.
The southpaw lasted just one more frame and was accountable for six hits, three walks, a balk and four strikeouts.
Reliever Adalberto Flores was treated rudely by the Hooks as Corpus Christi blew the contest open with three in the sixth. Flores achieved just two outs as Cook scored Gaston (lead-off walk) on a sacrifice fly and Cartwright's double to left-center plated Wladimir Sutil and Hernandez (singles).
Tim Murphy was tagged for the Hooks' ninth run as Gaston stroked a two-out single and Jimmy VanOstrand followed with a double in the seventh.
Frisco sends Clayton Hamilton (1-1) to the mound Thursday against new Hook lefty Patrick Urckfitz (0-0). The first 2,500 fans pick up a Hooks jute bag from Wells Fargo.
