New York Boulders News Release
Rockland County, NY - Tucker Nathans hit a walk-off three-run home run to give the New York Boulders a 5-4 win over the Washington Wild Things on Saturday at Palisades Credit Union Park,
Trailing 4-1 entering their final at-bat, Milton Smith, Jr, reached on an error by Washington shortstop Gabe Howell. Jack Sundberg and Zach Kirtley followed with singles that made it a 4-2 game. Nathans then hit Wild Things' closer Zach Strecker's delivery into the left field bleachers for an opposite field home run to win the ballgame.
The home run was Nathans' sixth of the season.
The Wild Things opened the night's scoring with three runs in the second inning against Boulders' starter Ryan Munoz, two of which were unearned after an error by New York centerfielder Milton Smith, Jr. With runners on the corners and one out, Smith, Jr. misplayed Hector Roa's fly ball that allowed Bralin Jackson to score. One out later, Cody Erickson's double scored Grant Heyman and Roa to give Washington a 3-0 lead.
Those were the only runs allowed by Munoz, who departed after six innings. He allowed four hits, walked two and struck out seven.
Meanwhile, Washington starter McKenzie Mills was just as good. In his six scoreless innings of work, the southpaw surrendered six hits, walked only one and struck out five. The win was the first this year for Mills against three defeats.
The Boulders got to Wild Things' reliever B.J. Sabol for an unearned run in the seventh to close their deficit to 3-1. Smith, Jr. singled and advanced to third when Sabol threw errantly on a pickoff attempt. Later in the inning, Zach Kirtley's grounder was booted by Washington second baseman Nick Ward allowing Smith, Jr. to score.
James Meeker came on to record the last out in the seventh for Washington, then tossed a perfect eighth as he extended his season-long shutout streak to 16 1/3 innings in 15 appearances.
However, Strecker was unable to close out the win.
Strecker took the loss as he dropped to 0-3 on the season, while Nathan Alexander, the Boulders' fourth pitcher of the evening, improved to 2-1 with the victory.
Washington tacked on what looked to be an insurance run in the top of the ninth on an RBI double by Connor Perry.
