Nashville SC secured the third seed in the Eastern Conference after earning a home result this past weekend at Nissan Stadium. With the draw, Nashville finished the 2021 campaign with a record of 12W-4L-18D and 54 points. At home, Nashville SC completed the season unbeaten owning a record of 8W-0L-9D.
Nashville became just the seventh team in MLS history to finish a regular season without a home loss, while maintaining the league's longest active home unbeaten streak. Nashville SC has gone 18 consecutive games without a home loss, dating back to last season with a 3-0 win in the 2020 Audi MLS Cup Playoffs against Inter Miami CF.
The Boys in Gold survived a gauntlet of a road schedule to end the 2021 season with 10 of its final 13 matches in the regular season away from Music City. In those 10 road matches, Nashville SC earned a record of 4W-2L-4D. Nashville allowed just 15 goals against in 17 road matches this season (0.88 GAA) which was not only the best road GAA in Major League Soccer this season but the fourth lowest in Major League Soccer history.
MVP candidate Hany Mukhtar was electrifying in his final match of the regular season this past weekend scoring off a free kick from a tight angle near the touch line. This marked Mukhtar's 16th goal of the season. Mukhtar registered 28 goals + assists, the most of any player in MLS.
Mukhtar finished the season strong scoring nine goals and registering eight assists in his final 15 matches of the season. In those 15 matches, Mukhtar went just three games without recording a goal or registering an assist in a match.
The German midfielder finished the regular season tied for fifth in MLS in goals, tied for fourth in assists with 12, tied for second in shots on target with 43 and finished fifth in shots with 94. Mukhtar led all Nashville SC players in those respective categories as well.
Goalkeeper Joe Willis had a true career-year in 2021 for Nashville SC. Willis was tied as the league leader in clean sheets with 13. This marks back-to-back seasons where Willis finished an MLS season as the leader in this category as the man in net earned nine shutouts last year.
Willis set career-highs in games started and played (34), minutes (3,060), shutouts (13), wins (12), saves (100), and goals against average (0.97). For Willis, his GAA was tied for the best in MLS among players who played 27 matches or more.
2021 MLS All-Star Walker Zimmerman made a strong case for his for back-to-back MLS Defender of the Year honors after anchoring Nashville SC to a goals-against average of less than 1.00 in his appearances this season.
Nashville SC boasted a record of 8W-3L-14D with Zimmerman in the lineup this season and ranked first among qualified Nashville SC outfield players in duel percentage at 65% and led Nashville SC players in headed duel percentage with 73.2%.
Zimmerman was a mainstay not only at the club level, but for the United States Men's National Team as well. This calendar year alone, Zimmerman has made seven appearances for the USMNT, with the most recent appearances coming in FIFA World Cup Qualifying matches.
Zimmerman served as the Captain during the first round of the 2021 Gold Cup for the United States and wore the armband once again during WCQ matches in a 90 minute performance against Panama. Last week it was announced Zimmerman was called into the latest roster.
