Nashville SC Captain Michael Reed Undergoes Successful Surgery, Will Miss Remainder of Season
August 8, 2019 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Nashville SC News Release
NASHVILLE - Nashville SC captain Michael Reed underwent successful surgery on his left ankle today after suffering an injury in the early moments of Wednesday night's victory over Hartford Athletic at First Tennessee Park.
Reed's recovery time will be about four to six months, which will sideline him for the remainder for the 2019 USL Championship season.
"At this time, our full focus and thoughts are on Michael, and in wishing him a speedy recovery," said General Manager Mike Jacobs. "He has been an outstanding leader for our club, both on and off the field, and is universally admired by friends, teammates, staff and supporters."
Reed suffered the injury on a hard tackle in the opening minutes of Nashville's 4-0 victory over Hartford Athletic on Wednesday night. Before being taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation, he spoke with teammates on the field and demonstrated his leadership ability, even in the most difficult of circumstances. His teammates rallied for him, scoring four goals in the second half to earn the victory.
He has been a fan favorite since his arrival at the beginning of Nashville SC's inaugural season in 2018, while also earning the respect of his coaching staff and teammates. After an overwhelming fan response, Reed was named the Budweiser Man of the Match on Wednesday night.
"We are all deeply affected by Michael's injury last night," said Head Coach Gary Smith. "His leadership, quality and character will be missed for the remainder of the season. He has great resolve, and I have no doubt he will be back to full health and at full strength sooner than we all expect."
Reed has been an integral part of Nashville SC's first two seasons and has been a part of many of the key moments in the club's young history. He scored two goals last season, including a free-kick goal that secured a draw against New York Red Bulls II that helped Nashville SC qualify for the 2018 USL Playoffs. He was also tied for the team lead in assists with five last season. Currently, Reed is in the top five in club history in appearances, assists, minutes played and starts.
Nashville SC returns to action on Saturday night against Bethlehem Steel FC. The match is presented by Piedmont/Tennessee 8-1-1. Tickets are available here for as low as $5.
