Iowa Cubs News Release

Nashville rallied down from one run to tie the game in the ninth and then scored twice in the tenth inning as they downed Iowa 5-3 Monday night at Principal Park.

Trailing 3-2 to Iowa entering the ninth, Nashville pushed across the tying run in the top of the frame. Reliever John Gaub gave up a lead off single to Caleb Gindl and then walked Edwin Maysonet to put runners on first and second. Chris Carpenter was brought in from the bullpen and retired Andy Gonzalez on a sacrifice bunt that moved the runners over to second and third. With Eric Farris batting, Carpenter then threw a wild pitch in the dirt that got past Castillo and allowed Gindl to score from third to tie the game.

After Iowa failed to answer in the bottom of the ninth, the game went into extra innings.

Carpenter remained in the game for the tenth and Nashville took advantage of two walks and some wild pitching to score two runs without recording a hit. With one out, Carpenter issued back-to-back walks to Taylor Green and Mat Gamel. Mike Rivera came to the plate next and the reliever delivered his second wild pitch of the game to allow the runners to move up one base. Later in the at-bat, Castillo had a high pitch from Carpenter glance off his glove and roll to the backstop to allow the go-ahead runner to score from third as the catcher was charged with a passed ball. Rivera eventually hit a sacrifice fly to bring in the second tally of the inning.

Nashville also got solo home runs from Gamel and Rivera in the fourth and sixth inning, respectively.

Iowa's offense came courtesy of an RBI-triple from Tyler Colvin and a two-run home run from Castillo. Castillo's blast was his 12th of the season and put Iowa ahead 3-2 at the time.

Cubs' starter Alberto Cabrera gave up both Nashville home runs but pitched well enough to earn his first quality start of the season. He gave up two runs on six hits, walked two and struck out six.

Carpenter (2-2, 5.70) was charged with the loss and blown save. He pitched two innings and did not give up a hit but gave up two runs (one earned), walked two and struck out one.

Sean Green (1-5, 4.11) earned his first win of the season after pitching a 1-2-3 ninth inning. Daniel Meadows preserved the win for Nashville, retiring the side in order in the tenth inning for his first save.

Iowa and Nashville continue the series Tuesday night at Principal Park. Sounds' RH Mike Fiers (2-0, 2.08) is scheduled to start and expected to face Cubs' RH Nick Struck (0-2, 6.30). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
