Akron RubberDucks News Release
(Altoona, Pa.) May 21, 2014 - Tyler Naquin was 2-5, with an RBI single and three-run homer Wednesday, as the Akron RubberDucks defeated the Altoona Curve, 6-2, at People's Natural Gas Field.
The RubberDucks (30-15) became the first EL team to reach the 30-win plateau this season. They have won two straight against the Curve, and will look to win the series on Thursday morning at 10:30. Akron also improved to 12-4 against Altoona this season.
Naquin lifted a Texas-League single to center field in the seventh inning off Nick Kingham (1-5) to drive in Ronny Rodriguez for a 3-1 Akron lead. After the Curve pulled to within 3-2 in their half of the seventh, Naquin drilled a three-run homer to left field in the top of the ninth to push the lead to a more comfortable, 6-2, margin. The homer was Naquin's second of the year, and his four RBI raised his total to 17.
After trailing 1-0 early, the RubberDucks came back to take a 2-1 lead in the sixth. Justin Toole scored when Tony Wolters' grounder to first was misplayed for an error, and Bryson Myles drove in Francisco Lindor with a double to left.
Akron starter Joe Colon (3-2) turned in a fine outing, scattering five hits and one run over five innings, and lowering his ERA to 2.72 through his first nine starts. He fanned a season-high seven batters and walked only one. He allowed a run- scoring single to Alen Hanson in the fifth which gave Altoona a brief 1-0 lead.
Tyler Sturdevant worked the final two innings for his fifth save in five chances. After entering the game with a 3-2 lead, he came back after Naquin's home run widened the margin and fanned the side in the ninth.
The RubberDucks and Curve (17-27) will conclude the series Thursday morning at 10:30. RHP Will Roberts (4-4, 4.17) will start for Akron, while RHP A.J. Morris (4-0, 1.46) is the announced starter for Altoona. The game will be broadcast on Fox Sports 1350 AM in the Akron area, and also via www.AkronRubberDucks.com.
