New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
READING, Pa. - Mike McDade returned from the disabled list with a bang on Wednesday, homering as part of a two-hit night against the Reading Fightin Phils (25-18). His homer gave New Hampshire (15-30) a 5-1 lead at the time, but the Phils came storming back to snare a 7-6 win to send the Fisher Cats to their franchise-record 11th consecutive defeat.
The back-and-forth started early with each team scoring in the first inning. The Fisher Cats netted a run on an Andy Burns single, but the Phils answered on a groundout to even it up at 1-1.
The Fisher Cats re-took the lead an inning later, scoring two more against starter Mike Nesseth. They loaded the bases for Jon Berti, who singled to shallow center to plate two and extend his hit streak to a season-best 11 games.
New Hampshire added to more to the advantage in the fifth. Ryan Schimpf hit his first triple to start the rally with one out. After Burns fouled out, Mike McDade, fresh off the disabled list before the game, hit a towering home run over the pool in right to give the Fisher Cats a 5-1 lead.
The fifth inning is when starter Scott Copeland ran into trouble. Leading 5-1, he loaded the bases on a double, a single, and hit batter. A pair of groundouts plated the first two runs before former Trenton Thunder infielder Addison Maruszak made it a one-run game with a single to center. The next better, Aaron Altherr, then launched a home run to center to complete the five-run inning and give the Phils a 6-5 lead.
Reading added a run against John Anderson in the sixth with Cameron Perkins adding his third run-scoring groundout to make it a 7-5 lead. The Fisher Cats got the run right back in the seventh when Matt Newman singled to right to cut it to 7-6.
That was all the Fisher Cats could do, as they stranded ten runners, including eight in scoring position. Newman had a chance to tie it in the ninth, but popped out with runners at the corners to end the game.
The teams will wrap up the series on Thursday morning at 11:35 a.m. Lefty Matt Boyd (0-1, 8.36) takes the ball against righty Severino Gonzalez (4-3, 4.22). Radio coverage begins at 11:15 a.m. with Tom Gauthier on WGIR 610 AM and www.nhfishercats.com.
The Fisher Cats return home after the short road trip for their first home series against the Future Red Sox, the Portland Sea Dogs, on Friday night. The four-day holiday weekend series features two fireworks shows, a Sunday hat giveaway, and a Memorial Day matinee. Tickets are available at www.nhfishercats.com, at the Fisher Cats ticket office, and by calling (603) 641-2005.
