New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
MANCHESTER, N.H. - For the first time this season, the Future Red Sox, the Portland Sea Dogs, will visit Northeast Delta Dental Stadium. The following is a look at what's happening at the ballpark during the Sea Dogs' visit over Memorial Day Weekend, May 23-26.
OPPONENT
The Portland Sea Dogs currently have six of the Red Sox Top 20 prospects on their roster according to MLB.com. They are also leading the Eastern Division leaders with a record of 27-15. The Sea Dogs are 3-1 against the Fisher Cats this season.
TOP PROSPECTS
Mookie Betts, 2B - Betts has been the story of the Eastern League in 2014. Leading the league in virtually every category, he has shown to be a patient and strong hitter who can find the gaps. Betts is an above-average base runner and was one of a handful of Minor Leaguers with at least 15 homeruns and 30 stolen bases in 2013. He was named the Eastern League Player of the Month for April and just recently had a 66 game on-base streak ended. Betts is the No. 5 prospect in the Red Sox organization according to MLB.com. Henry Owens, LHP - Owens throws his fastball in the low 90s and it plays up thanks to his deceptive delivery and long arms. Scouts say Owens' command isn't great and he proved to be vulnerable against left-handed hitters, but he has a good feel for pitching, giving scouts confidence he will make the adjustments necessary to reach his potential as a middle-of-the-rotation starter. Owens is the No. 1 prospect in the Red Sox organization according to MLB.com. He is scheduled to face Fisher Cats top prospect Aaron Sanchez in game 2 of the series on Saturday night. Blake Swihart, C - Swihart threw out 42 percent of would-be base-stealers in 2013, leading the Carolina League. A switch-hitter, Swihart makes consistent hard contact from both sides of the plate. His swing is more geared for line drives now, but he already has four home runs this year compared to a total of two last season. Swihart is the No. 3 prospect in the Red Sox Organization according to MLB.com.
