Nailers Snag Comeback Win in Reading
December 11, 2011 - ECHL (ECHL)
Wheeling Nailers News Release
READING, PA- The Wheeling Nailers had alternated wins and losses for their nine previous games, entering Sunday afternoon's contest with the Reading Royals at Sovereign Center. That streak is now over, as the Nailers erased a 2-1 deficit with three unanswered the goals, doubling up the Royals 4-2 in front of 3,823 fans.
Exactly one minute into the contest, the Royals opened the scoring. Denny Urban took a wrist shot from the left point, and Dennis McCauley got a deflection on the puck in the slot, sending it into the back of the net. The Nailers answered 2:33 later. Paul Crowder handed the puck to Chris Barton, as Wheeling entered the offensive zone. Upon receiving the pass, Barton dropped the puck off for Kyle Bushee, who scored through Mark Owuya's legs for his first ECHL goal of the season. With 2:29 left in the period, Reading regained the lead, shortly after killing off a Nailers' power play. Everett Sheen found Dale Mitchell cutting toward the net on the right side. Mitchell gathered in the pass, and lifted a shot into the top part of the goal.
In the second period, the Nailers turned the scoreboard around on the Royals, starting with a shorthanded goal. Patrick Johnson turned the puck around the boards to Olivier Dame-Malka at the left point. Dame-Malka let a slap shot go, keeping it along the ice to tie the score at two. A little more than halfway through the middle frame, Wheeling took their first lead of the contest. Chris Barton took a shot from the right circle that was stopped in awkward fashion by Owuya. That awkward save led to a rebound in the crease, which was tapped in by Paul Crowder.
Wheeling doubled the lead at the 8:50 mark of the third period. Zach Hansen took a shot on goal from the right side that was stopped by Owuya. However, the rebound kicked out on the left side to Ben Farrer, who hammered back in, giving the Nailers a 4-2 victory.
Patrick Killeen picked up the win in goal for the Nailers, making 19 saves on 21 shots. Mark Owuya took the loss for the Royals, allowing four goals on 39 shots.
The Nailers and Royals will meet up again on Friday night December 16th, at Cambria County War Memorial Arena in Johnstown. Face-off is scheduled for 7:35. It is Teddy bear toss night. Bring a new or unused Teddy Bear to toss on the ice after the Nailers 1st goal. For ticket information call the Nailers office at 304-234-GOAL or online at shop.wheelingnailers.com.
