
Nailers outlast Bullies 7-6 in a shootout

Atlantic City, NJ â Wheeling's Mark Kosick tallied the decisive goal in the fourth round of the shootout to lead the Wheeling Nailers to a 7-6 victory over the Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies before 1927 at Historic Boardwalk Hall in ECHL action Wednesday. It was the third consecutive time this season that Wheeling has defeated Atlantic City in a shootout.
Wheeling (12-8-0) would open the scoring just 2:38 into the first period when Brendon Hodge's dump-in ricocheted off the corner boards and past Bullies goaltender Jake Moreland to give the Nailers a 1-0 lead. The Bullies would counter with two unanswered goals to close the period. Scott Horvath collected Fraser Clair's rebound and beat Wheeling goaltender Joe Exter top shelf at 4:53 to tie the game 1-1. Luke Curtin gave the Bullies a 2-1 lead with a power play goal at 17:38 of the period off a pass from Jason Notermann.
The Bullies extended their lead to 3-1 at the start of the second period. Brian Fahey's point shot from the right side deflected off a Nailers defenseman and past Exter at 5:23 to give Atlantic City a 3-1 advantage. Wheeling would strike back with a power play goal from Cam Paddock at 8:36 of the period to cut the deficit to 3-2. The Bullies would counter just 28 seconds later when Curtin fed a streaking Brad Both in the high slot and Both ripped a shot over the left shoulder of Exter to give Atlantic City a two-goal advantage again at 4-2. Evgeny Lazerev brought the Nailers back to within one when he beat Moreland from the right-wing circle at 15:20 to make the score 4-3. However, Paul Caponigri extended the Bullies lead to two yet again with a power play goal, taking a pass at the right-wing circle from Clair and beating Exter along the ice at 17:38 of the period. Wheeling would have the period's final say. James Laux collected his own rebound to the left of the Bullies net and tucked a backhand shot underneath the crossbar right before the period expired at 19:58 to make the score 5-4 heading into the second intermission.
Ed McGrane tallied the equalizer for Wheeling just 1:43 into the third period when he played the puck of Moreland's pads and into the net to tie the game at 5-5. Kosick gave the Nailers only their second lead of the game at 10:08 when he collected his own rebound and lifted the puck over Moreland for a 6-5 Wheeling advantage. However, this time it would be the Bullies who would strike back, as Derek Edwardson found the bouncing puck in the slot and slapped a shot past Exter at 14:12 of the period to tie the score 6-6 and send the game to an eventual overtime and shootout.
Atlantic City out-shot Wheeling 45-34. The Bullies went 2-5 on the power play.
