December 11, 2012 - ECHL (ECHL)
Wheeling Nailers News Release
Over the next few weeks, the 2012-13 regular season schedule will ramp up drastically for the Wheeling Nailers, who will begin a stretch of eight games in eleven days on Wednesday night in Toledo. For the past few weeks, along with picking up points in five of their last six games, the Nailers have been doing their part to succeed in the community.
On Wednesday, November 21st, Nailer players officially began their campaign to raise money for former teammate Chris Kushneriuk, who is currently battling cancer. Over the course of two games, in which the players had a table set up in the concourse, approximately $2,000 was raised. The team then added to that total, thanks to celebrity serving at Quaker Steak & Lube, Perkins, Bob Evans, Logan's Roadhouse, and Generations, tacking another $500 on to the mark. However, the work for Kushneriuk wasn't finished there. Two jerseys (one Wheeling Nailers, and one Milwaukee Admirals, courtesy of Stan Drulia) were auctioned off to put another $450 on the board. Fans who wish to donate to the cause, or show their support, can visit the website set up by the players at www.chriskushneriuk.org.
Sticking with the theme of charities, the Nailers continue to encourage all fans to bring the pop tabs from their beverages to either WesBanco Arena or the Wheeling Nailers office at 1315 Main Street, as five-year old Emma McHugh's family raises money so that Emma is able to afford a new kidney. Emma and her family attended Saturday, December 8th's home game against the Florida Everblades, dropping the puck at center ice, before the contest began. Her mother Wendy then joined DJ Abisalih on the radio, during the second intermission.
While lots of work has been taking place at the rink, the players have also been taking the time to make visits around the community. Last Thursday, the team's new floor hockey set arrived, courtesy of Play it Again Sports, and Joe Stejskal and Matt Germain were quick to put it to the test, teaching a pair of gym classes at Bridgeport Elementary School. Later in the day, Peter Lenes and Reid McNeill visited children at the Easter Seals (National Road in Wheeling), helping to design Christmas stockings, while also enjoying outdoor activities.
Coming up this week, before the team hits the road, players will be making a visit at Ohio Valley Medical Center, while also teaching youth hockey with the kids in the Wheeling Amateur Hockey Association (WAHA).
Be sure to tune in each week on Monday from 3-5 in the afternoon for PuckRock, hosted by Nick Nash on Eagle 107.5 (eagle1075.com). Nick is joined by DJ Abisalih, a coach, and two players to talk about the action on the ice, life off of the ice, as well as the charity challenge.
DJ can also be heard every Monday at noon on the Bill DiFabio variety show on 1600 WKKX, every Thursday at 2:10 on Penguins Live with Mark Madden and Steve Mears, every gameday during the week on Eagle 107.5 with Nick Nash, and on most Wednesdays on WKKX's Wild Sports Wednesdays, hosted by Chad Anthony. Also, starting this week, players will be heard at 8:10 each Friday with David Bloomquist on 1170 WWVA.
If you would like to set up a community event with the Nailers, please call (304) 234-GOAL, or e-mail pr@wheelingnailers.com. All requests must be submitted at least one week in advance of the event.
