Sour Set in South Carolina

The Wheeling Nailers will play their final road game of the regular season against the former South Division on Monday, when they conclude a 3-in-3 set by battling the Gwinnett Gladiators. The first two tilts of the weekend didn't go Wheeling's way, as the South Carolina Stingrays collected 3-1 and 5-1 victories on Saturday and Sunday. In Sunday's contest, the Stingrays blasted out to a 4-0 lead in the opening period, before the two sides exchanged tallies during the final forty minutes of play. Both of the Nailers' goals at North Charleston Coliseum were scored by defensemen, as Morgan Ellis lit the lamp on Saturday, before David Makowski dented the twine on Sunday. Former Nailer Cody Sylvester netted two markers for the Stingrays, including Sunday's game winner.

"Glad" to Earn a Road Win

The Gwinnett Gladiators also spent the weekend in the Palmetto State, playing a pair of games against the Greenville Road Warriors on Friday and Saturday. After suffering a 5-3 setback in the opener, Gwinnett responded with a 3-2 triumph on Saturday night, as Adam Brown shined in goal, stopping 41 of the 43 shots he faced. Travis Ouellette snapped a 2-2 deadlock with 4:09 remaining in regulation, lifting the Gladiators to just their third road win of the season. Gwinnett has picked up two of its road victories in December, as it also defeated Toledo, 4-3 in overtime on the 9th. The Gladiators are 6-5-1 at The Arena at Gwinnett Center.

W-Y-E-R Spelled Relief

Rookie goaltender Jeff Wyer made his second appearance of the season on Sunday afternoon, taking the crease at the start of the second period. Despite the score when he entered the contest, Wyer gave his team a tremendous chance to try to cut into the South Carolina lead, as he stopped each of the first 16 shots he faced. Unfortunately, the Nailers were only able to get one goal in the contest, while the former University of New Hampshire Wildcat went on to make 21 saves on 22 shots in the no-decision. Wheeling is currently carrying three netminders on its roster - Wyer, Franky Palazzese, and Eric Hartzell - the only three to have appeared in a game with the club this season.

From Teammate to Opposing Coach

During the 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons, Tyler Murovich and Andy Brandt were teammates with the Gladiators. Although it is only two seasons later, a lot has changed during that time. Murovich spent the 2013-14 campaign with the Orlando Solar Bears, before returning for his second tour of duty with the Nailers. Meanwhile, Brandt has traded in his skates for a suit, now serving as Gwinnett's head coach, after spending parts of two seasons as Rick Emmett's assistant. Current Gladiators Casey Pierro-Zabotel (who played with Murovich in Wheeling in 2010-11) and Tristin Llewellyn played with Murovich and Brandt on the 2012-13 squad.

Last Chance for Revenge

Monday night marks the second and final head-to-head meeting between the Nailers and Gladiators this season, with both battles taking place at the Arena at Gwinnett Center. Thus far, the script for the series has been identical to that of 2013-14, as Gwinnett took the opening game of two on home ice. That prior collision took place on October 24th, when Mark Guggenberger's 25 saves blanked Wheeling, 5-0. Last January, the Nailers picked up a 2-0 shutout win to even that set of games, while pulling to within two games (at the time) in the historical series. Following Monday, 14 of the 22 all-time games between Wheeling and Gwinnett will have taken place in Georgia, including ten of the last 12. The Gladiators have only visited WesBanco Arena twice in the last five seasons, while also battling the Nailers twice in Johnstown.

The Nailers will have a three-game homestand from January 9th-11th.

Reading comes to town on the 9th for Faith & Family Night, which will also be a Flat Screen Friday, courtesy of The Highlands, as well as the Law Firm of Bordas and Bordas. In addition, a player poster will be given to the first 2,000 fans in attendance, thanks to RSQP Print & Design.

Elmira is the opposition on the 10th, as the Nailers will be holding a Princess Party from 6-7. Only 100 tickets are available for the party. That game will also be the annual Girl Scout Night.

Finally, Indy pays a visit on the 11th for a Family Funday with $5 kids tickets, a post game skate with the team, and another Oglebay Good Zoo Day.

Wheeling Nailers 2014-15 season tickets, flex tickets, group tickets and single-game tickets are on sale now. For more information, call 304-234-GOAL or visit wheelingnailers.com.
