December 29, 2014 - ECHL (ECHL)
Evansville IceMen News Release
CINCINNATI, OH.- The Cincinnati Cyclones scored four times in the second period to topple the Evansville IceMen, presented by Coors Light, by a score of 5-2 at the US Bank Arena. With the loss, the IceMen (9-15-2-2, 22 points) fell six points behind the Cyclones (12-11-0-4, 28 points) for third place in the North Division.
The IceMen struck first. Jim McKenzie forced a turnover from Jaynen Rissling. The puck bounced off Matt Lowry towards the front of the net.
Kevin Harvey picked the puck up right in front of the net and potted it on a backhand to give Evansville a 1-0 lead The IceMen carried a one goal advantage into the first break on the strength of Harvey's seventh of the season.
As the horn sounded to end the first period, Daniel Johnston dropped the gloves and traded punches with Brian Nugent. The fight was Johnston's second of the season.
The Cyclones swarmed the IceMen with four goals in the second period. Josh McFadden scored on a power play slap shot from the blue line to it at one.
Three of the Cyclones' goals came within 64 seconds as Branden Gracel, Nugent, and Zach Buddish all scored in just over a minute to push the Cyclones lead to 4-1 entering the final period.
In the final frame, the IceMen fought back as Brandon Martell sniped in a shot from the blue line for his first goal in an IceMen uniform. Martell's goal came unassisted as he intercepted a clearing attempt and fired into the back of the net for his third of the season.
The Cyclones tacked on one more as Gracel netted his second of the night to secure a 5-2 win for Cincinnati. Two more fights broke out in the final few minutes as Peter Sakaris fought for the second time in as many games. Harvey hammered Rissling with a series of punches before referees intervened.
The IceMen will return home to face the Quad City Mallards in a New Year's Eve showdown. Puck drop is set for 7:15 p.m. The first 1,000 fans at the Ford Center will receive thunder sticks. Stick around after the game as the IceMen ring in 2015 with a bang as fans will get to enjoy a post-game fireworks show.
