September 1, 2009 - Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA)
Washington Mystics News Release
Washington, D.C- the Washington Mystics, in partnership with corporate partner Sibley Memorial Hospital, held a post-game auction on Sunday, August 30, following the team's 81-75 victory over the Minnesota Lynx. The event raised $39,375 for the Sullivan Center for Breast Health. The Center offers a rare combination of medically sophisticated breast health care and breast cancer treatment, state-of-the-art technology, a warm pleasant environment and streamlined patient-centered experience. In addition, the Mystics moved to third place in the Eastern Conference.
"Once again, Mystics fans demonstrated why they are in fact some of the best fans in the WNBA," Mystics Chief Operating Officer Greg Bibb stated. "Through generosity our second annual auction raised enough money to positively affect the treatment of hundreds of women fighting breast cancer. We are extremely appreciative to all who participated and we look forward to an even bigger and better auction in 2010."
Items auctioned included a Washington Mystics team-signed autographed ball, autographed pink jerseys by Marissa Coleman and Crystal Langhorne, an Alex Ovechkin autographed jersey and two tickets to the Georgetown/Duke basketball game.
"Mystics fans and other donors were extremely enthusiastic and generous last night and we are grateful," says Robert L. Sloan, President and Chief Executive Officer at Sibley Memorial Hospital. "We also thank Mystics President and Managing Partner Sheila C. Johnson and John Thompson III, Georgetown basketball coach and his wife Monica, breast cancer survivor and co-founder of the John Thompson III Foundation."
Serving Washington, DC since 1890, Sibley Memorial Hospital is a 328-bed acute care nonprofit hospital.
