"Fast Break To Reading" encourages kids across the nation to pick up a book and read. As part of the program, Dream players Chamique Holdsclaw and Ivory Latta will host a reading timeout with Pitney Bowes on September 8 at Long Middle School. Holdsclaw and Latta will read to youth from After-School All-Stars. The organization will also receive a HP gift card to use towards the purchase of computer products, courtesy of Pitney Bowes.
About After-School All-Stars
The 60 middle school students in attendance are all participants in the After-School All-Stars, which began as a summer athletic program for inner city kids in 1994 and later developed to a free after-school program. The mission of After-School All-Stars is to provide opportunities for young people to participate in educational, sports, cultural and community enrichment programs; to build self-confidence and self-esteem; to encourage youth to say "no" to gangs, drugs and violence, and "yes" to hope, learning and life. The goal is to offer a quality, high performing program with collaborative leadership in which students will get better grades in conduct and school, tap into more opportunities for academic and personal growth, and enhance their peer relations and emotional adjustment.
