WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (Aug. 19, 2015) - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans nipped the Winston-Salem Dash 4-2 in nine innings to sweep Wednesday's doubleheader at BB&T Ballpark.

With the defeat, the Dash's 55-day run with at least a share of first place in the Southern Division is over. With Carolina knocking off Salem, Winston-Salem sits just 2.5 games ahead of the Mudcats for the final Southern Division playoff spot.

The score was knotted at two in the ninth when Winston-Salem reliever Brad Goldberg (1-3) walked the first two batters of the inning. After a sacrifice bunt, Goldberg issued a free pass to Carlos Penalver to load the bases.

The Dash (31-20, 61-60) brought in Euclides Leyer, who fanned Trey Martin for the frame's second out. However, Leyer walked each of the next two batters to bring home two runs and gift the Pelicans a 4-2 lead.

Myrtle Beach (32-20, 73-48) righty David Berg worked around a leadoff single in the ninth to nail down his third save.

The game was two-all in the eighth when Keon Barnum singled with one down. A Nick Basto double put runners on second and third before the Pelicans walked Nolan Earley intentionally to load the bases. However, Myrtle Beach reliever Jasvir Rakkar (3-1) fanned T.J. Williams and induced Cleuluis Rondon into a groundout to escape the threat. Winston-Salem finished 2-for-11 with runners in scoring position.

With no score in the third, Trey Martin began the frame with a walk. Daniel Lockhart laid a bunt down the third base line. Trey Michalczewski's throw to first bounced to the bag, allowing Martin to scoot to third. With nobody covering second base, Lockhart took off for second with Dash center fielder Adam Engel sprinting in to try to get to the base. At first base, Williams airmailed the throw by Engel into center, allowing both runs to score.

Those runs were charged to Dash starter Andre Wheeler, who received a no-decision with two unearned runs allowed in three hitless innings. Thus, Myrtle Beach posted a pair of scoreless innings, and neither included a base hit.

Winston-Salem responded in the fourth. Michalczewski pounded his second double of the game to begin the inning. Two batters later, Basto laced a two-bagger of his own to bring home Michalczewski, cutting the Pelicans' lead to 2-1.

With the same score in the bottom of the sixth, Barnum singled with one out. Two batters later, Earley drilled an opposite-field double that plated Barnum from first to knot the score at two.

Winston-Salem reliever Matt Cooper went a career-high three scoreless innings, yielding only two hits with three strikeouts. Cooper has now worked 20 consecutive scoreless frames dating back to his time with Low-A Kannapolis

Spencer Adams (1-0, 0.00 ERA) takes the bump in Thursday's finale against Myrtle Beach's Daury Torrez (9-6, 3.98 ERA). Pregame radio coverage is available at 6:45 p.m., with the first pitch at 7 p.m. on 600 AM-WSJS and the TuneIn App.

The final game of this series is a Thirsty Thursday, presented by Camel City Goods, meaning select beers are available for $1 through the seventh inning. For tickets, call the Dash at (336) 714-2287 or visit wsdash.com.
