PELICANS SWEEP DASH IN TWIN BILL
Myrtle Beach claimed a pair of narrow victories over the Dash in Wednesday's doubleheader at BB&T Ballpark. Despite 6.2 strong innings from Yency Almonte, Myrtle Beach took down the Dash 4-1 in the opener, during which Winston-Salem collected only three hits. The nightcap lasted nine innings, with the Pelicans claiming a 4-2 victory. In the deciding ninth, Myrtle scored on a pair of bases loaded, two-out walks. The Dash did not score in the bottom of the eighth despite loading the bases with one out. Thus, Winston dropped to 1-7 in extra-inning games.
QUITE A RUN
With Wednesday's sweep, the Pelicans jumped the Dash in the Southern Division's second half standings. This marks the first time all half that Winston-Salem does not own at least a share of first place. Winston-Salem's 55-day run atop the division represents the longest such streak in the Dash era (2009-present) by 13 days (42 in 2009). Winston was in last place for the final 50 days of the first half of 2015, and the club was in first for a combined 33 days from the start of 2013 to the end of this season's first half.
RARE CLOSE LOSSES
Before Wednesday night, Winston-Salem was 24-10 (.706) in games decided by three runs or less since the All-Star break, including a league-best 13-2 mark in one-run contests. However, Winston-Salem dropped two-run and three-run decisions on Wednesday to drop their record to 24-12 (.667) in such situations. In the first half, the Dash were just 18-25 (.419) in games decided by three runs or less.
ALMOST POLAR OPPOSITES
Winston-Salem has played in close games due to its strong pitching and its inconsistent offense. The Dash are second in the CL with a 3.27 ERA, but their .242 team batting average is last on the eight-team circuit. Winston-Salem has logged no more than three runs in 66 of its first 121 games (55 percent), while Dash pitching has given up three runs or less in 60 contests (49.6 percent).
WELCOME BACK, SPENCER
Right-hander Spencer Adams, the fourth-best prospect in the White Sox system according to MLB.com, will make his second High-A start in Thursday's finale. Adams blanked the powerful Lynchburg lineup over six innings in a winning effort on July 19 at BB&T Ballpark (4 H, 4 K, 1 BB). In 19 starts with Low-A Kannapolis, the 19-year-old logged a 9-5 record and a 3.24 ERA. Adams permitted three earned runs or less in all but three of his outings with the Intimidators.
PLAYOFF PROCEDURES
The Dash have two potential ways to reach the Carolina League postseason for the first time since 2012. Winston-Salem can win the division outright or finish second to Myrtle Beach in the second half standings. Even though the Dash have dropped out of first place, the squad still leads Carolina by two-and-a-half games for the final Southern Division postseason spot.
SPEAKING OF THE MUDCATS
Following Thursday's finale, when the Dash will attempt to avoid their third sweep of the year, Winston-Salem will entertain Carolina for the final matchup between the two clubs in 2015. The Dash are 11-8 against the Mudcats thus far this season. Winston-Salem has only hit .225 and scored 3.4 runs per game against the Muddies, though the Dash's 2.89 ERA in the season series is the club's second-best against any team (Wilmington, 2.78). Carolina has rattled off three consecutive victories, and the Muddies are eyeing a home sweep of struggling Salem on Thursday at Five County Stadium.
DASH DOTS
Winston-Salem pitching had not uncorked more than three free passes in a single inning this season before a five-walk ninth inning in the nightcap of Wednesday's doubleheader...Matt Cooper extended his scoreless streak to 20 innings with a career-high three innings of work (15 with Low-A Kannapolis; five with Winston-Salem)...Against the Pelicans this year, Winston is 5-11 at home and 6-1 on the road.
