Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
NOT UNTOUCHED, JUST UNBLEMISHED
The Pelicans allowed their first three runs of the season Sunday, falling 3-2 to the Wilmington Blue Rocks. All of the runs, however, were unearned. Myrtle Beach remains the only Major or Minor League team in America to have not allowed an earned run this season.
GARFIELD AND ODIE-BEL
Myrtle Beach shortstop Odubel Herrera committed two of the Pelicans three fifth inning errors on Sunday. It's only the second time in four seasons since Herrera came stateside that he'd com-mitted two miscues. He had two errors vs Hagerstown on April 22nd last year. This, however, is Herrera's first year as a short-stop. He played only five games at short last season while mostly manning second base.
CALL US LOBBYISTS, CAUSE WE LIVE ON K STREET
In the first two games this season, Pelicans pitchers struck out a combined 24 batters. Last season the Birds struck out double digit opposing batters 48 times (more than 1/3 of the time). Myrtle Beach began that success early, K'ing 16 batters in each of the first two games, also against Wilmington. Whit Merrifield has struck out nine times in the four games (this year and last year) combined.
TOOLS OF AWESOMENESS
Tomas Telis hit two homeruns opening night, tying the team record for most homeruns hit in a single game. He's the 50th Pelican all-time to hit multiple homeruns in one game. Six Pelicans hit two homers in a game in 2011, the last being Mike Olt against Lynchburg on August 25th. The feat was just the second time a Pelican has homered from both sides of the plate in the same game. Jarrod Saltalamacchia was the first to do so, going yard against Winston-Salem on July 25, 2005. Salty hit the first off lefthander Ryan Wing in the first inning and the second off righthander Randy Flores in the seventh.
NICHOL(AS) FOR YOUR THOUGHTS?
Brett Nicholas joins the Pelicans from Low-A Hickory for to-night's game. Nicholas had not yet played a game for the Craw-dads this season. A sixth round pick in 2010, Nicholas is a product of the University of Missouri. He went 1-9 in three games for the Pelicans last season, filling in for an injured Vinny DiFazio in May.
