Winston-Salem Dash News Release
FREDERICK, MD (APRIL 10, 2012) - In a back-and-forth series opener, the Frederick Keys nipped the Dash 7-6 Tuesday night at Harry Grove Stadium.
Both clubs scored early and often. After both clubs posted a one-run first frame, the Keys (3-1) outscored Winston-Salem four runs to one in the second. Ronnie Welty's two-run triple was the big hit for Frederick in the inning.
The Dash (1-3) responded quickly in the top of the third. Brady Shoemaker cleared the boards in right center field for his first home run of the season, a two-run blast. Four batters later, Nick Ciolli singled home the tying run.
Dan Black put the Dash on top in the fourth. Black pummeled a home run over the wall in left for his first homer of the year and Winston-Salem's third. Black's blast gave the Dash a 6-5 advantage, and it gave Winston-Salem a run in four straight innings for the first time this year.
Frederick pushed back on top for good in the fifth inning. After the first two men reached, Phil Negus (0-1) retired back-to-back Keys. However, Brian Stevens, who is hitting .500 thus far this season, singled home both runners to give the Keys a 7-6 lead that they would not relinquish.
In the game's final five innings, the Dash did not score and could only muster three base hits. Two of those knocks came in the top of the ninth inning, but Frederick closer David Walters stranded the bases loaded to earn the save and preserve the win.
Winston-Salem starter Ryan Buch struggled in three innings of work. The right-hander surrendered five earned runs on six hits in his 2012 debut. Reliever Leroy Hunt faced the minimum in his two innings of action. Hunt whiffed three Keys in the outing.
Winston-Salem and Frederick continue this three-game series Wednesday night at 7:00. Former fourth-round pick Matt Heidenreich will make his first career High-A start against fellow righty Justin Moore. Pre-game coverage on wsdash.com begins at 6:45.
The Dash open up their home schedule Friday night against Carolina at BB&T Ballpark. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit wsdash.com.
