Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

HOY, OH HOY: Outfielder Jared Hoying, the 2010 Northwest League MVP, may be starting to round into form in his first full professional season. After a freshman campaign that saw him bat .325 with ten homers, 51 RBIs, and 20 stolen bases for the Spokane Indians, Hoying never seemed to get comfortable in the first half of 2011 for the Pelicans. The outfielder jammed his shoulder on a head-first slide into second base while stealing a bag on Opening Day and batted just .229 before the All-Star Break. In the last few games of the first half and the start to the second, however, Hoying has looked like the star he was a year ago in Short-Season A ball. Going into play on June 18, his last game played before the All-Star Break, Jared was a .220 hitter. In the nine games since, the Fort Loramie, Ohio native has batted .425 (17-for-40) with six multiple-hit games, two doubles, a triple, and eight runs batted in. Hoying has lifted his overall average to .253 and his OPS from .666 to .729 over that span.

POWERFUL PRINCE: Hoying's fellow outfield and first-name mate Jared Prince has surged at the plate of late, as well. A seventh-inning homer against Lynchburg starter Chris Masters Saturday night got the Pelicans on the board and was Prince's second jack in as many nights following his home run off Drew Pomeranz in Friday's finale with Kinston. Over his last ten games, Prince is batting .325 (13-for-40) with seven runs batted in.

BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE: Two of Myrtle Beach's lightest-hitting offensive performers, infielder Andres James and outfielder David Paisano, have also put together good stretches at the plate. Both have climbed over the Mendoza Line in the last week with Paisano capitalizing on a five-game hitting streak that ended with last night's pinch-hit flyout in the ninth. The Cumana, Venezuela native was 9-for-21 (.429) during the streak with a double, a triple and three RBIs. Paisano has posted three three-hit games out of his last eleven and is batting .348 (16-46) since June 12, raising his average from .151 to .227. James added another two hits in Saturday's opener with the Hillcats, his fourth multi-hit game in his last five starts after posting just one in his first 29. James's two knocks Saturday lifted his average to .295. Andres entered June 25's home date against Potomac batting .155 and is now up to .205 thanks to a .450 stretch with nine hits in his last 20 at-bats.
