Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, NC (JULY 3, 2011) - Bryce Brentz' three-run home run capped a four-run fifth inning as the Red Sox breezed past the Dash 7-4 on Saturday night at BB&T Ballpark. A sellout crowd of 7,143, the biggest home crowd of the season, could not spark Winston-Salem to a third straight win.
For the second straight night, the Dash (6-4, 38-42) scored two early runs against Salem's starter. In the second inning, Luis Sierra hit an RBI double and Kyle Colligan hit a sacrifice fly off Drake Britton to push Winston ahead 2-0.
The Red Sox (4-7, 35-45) tied the game in the fourth inning against Dash starter Matt Wickswat. Dan Butler got the first Sox run in with an RBI single and then Miles Head pushed in the tying tally on a double play.
Wickswat (0-1) appeared to tire during the fifth inning. With one out, he threw away a grounder hit back to the mound, allowing Shannon Wilkerson to reach base. He scored when Kolbrin Vitek doubled him home to give Salem its first lead. Jorge Padron followed with a single, chasing Wickswat from the ballgame.
J.R. Ballinger entered in relief and Brentz hit the decisive home run on the sixth pitch he saw to give the Red Sox a 6-2 lead. Brentz has now hit eight home runs in 17 Carolina League games, including four against the Dash at BB&T Ballpark.
Salem scored again the sixth when Alex Valdez tripled and scored on another double play groundout.
Winston got back-to-back home runs to start the bottom of the sixth from Jose Martinez and Ian Gac, but Tom Ebert and Chris Martin retired 12 of the next 13 batters to finish the game.
Ebert (4-3) picked up the win with four innings of relief while Martin earned the three-inning save. Wickswat took the loss after allowing five runs (four earned) in 4.1 innings.
Winston-Salem missed the opportunity to seize first place in the Southern Division with the defeat and remains within one-half game of the top spot. Kinston lost earlier in the day but maintained its narrow first place lead.
The teams continue their four-game series on Independence Day at 7 p.m. when LHP Brad Furnish (--, --) makes his White Sox organizational debut against RHP Pete Ruiz (4-3, 4.90). Fans can tune into the game beginning at 6:45 on www.wsdash.com or on television, as the game will be carried on WXII's THIS Carolina channel at 7 p.m..
