Coverage begins at 4:45 p.m. on MyrtleBeachPelicans.com/Broadcast, TuneIn and the MiLB First Pitch app.

PEREDA, STEELE LEAD BIRDS TO 5-4 WIN

Jhonny Pereda homered and drove in two and Justin Steele took a no-hitter into the sixth inning Sunday to lead Myrtle Beach to a 5-4 win over Buies Creek. Pereda got the scoring started with his solo shot in the first. The Birds tacked on three more runs in the second on RBI singles from Andruw Monasterio and Wladimir Galindo, as well as a sacrifice fly from Michael Cruz. Pereda's RBI single in the fifth extended the lead to 5-0. Buies Creek started to rally with three in the sixth and one more in the ninth inning, but Tyler Peyton induced a 6-4-3 double play to end the game and pick up his 10th save. Steele struck out seven and surrendered three runs, two earned, on three hits in five innings.

START WITH THE DICE ROLL

Over the last 16 games, Myrtle Beach starting pitchers have ceded three earned runs or less 15 times. During that span, the club's starters have pitched a total of 78.1 innings, yielding 29 earned runs on 58 hits for a 3.33 ERA. The Birds' bullpen has started to heat up recently as well; After posting a 6.38 ERA due to 13 runs, all earned, on 27 hits in 18.1 frames in the seven games from August 2-11, Pelicans relievers have allowed just five runs, four earned, on 29 hits in 35.1 innings (1.02 ERA) over the last eight contests.

THOSE DASTARDLY DASH

From 2005, when the club's recorded history begins, through 2017, Myrtle Beach had never been swept by a club three times in one season. However, in a dysmal 2018 campaign, the Pelicans have encountered several lows. One of those would be four sweeps of the Birds at the hands of the Dash, a first for any opponent in recorded Pelicans history. Myrtle Beach is just 2-12 against Winston-Salem this season, their worst record against any club in a single campaign since at least 2005.

TWO CHANCES TO SETTLE

The Pelicans will play their 12th doubleheader of the year on Tuesday at Winston-Salem. The Birds are just 7-14 (.333) in twin bill contests this season, the worst such mark in the Carolina League. The 12 doubleheaders Myrtle Beach will have recorded by the end of Tuesday are the club's most in a single campaign in their recorded history, which dates back through the 2005 season.

THUS ENDS OUR TURN

Myrtle Beach took Sunday's rubber game with Buies Creek, extending the club's streak without a series loss to three. The last time the Birds played three sets without a loss was when they swept all nine games with Down East, Buies Creek and Potomac from June 1-10. Having said that, the Pelicans' elimination number is just three; that means the club could be eliminated from the postseason for the first time since 2010 as early as today with two losses and an Astros win over Carolina. Myrtle Beach is also just one defeat away from sealing the club's first non-winning season since the Birds went 58-82 (.414) during the 2010 campaign.

ARE THEY TRAINING FOR THIS?

Over the Pelicans' last 25 contests, 22 have been decided by three runs or less, including a remarkable 18 by just one tally. In the 100 battles prior to this run, the Birds had played in just 20 one-run games. On the season, Myrtle Beach has played 81 games decided by no more than three runs, the second-highest total in the Carolina League. The Pelicans are 41-40 (.506) in those engagements. Nine of Myrtle Beach's last 11 contests have been decided by precisely one score, including six of their last seven games.

IT'S NO DATE NIGHT IN MURRELS INLET

In addition to a tough schedule, the Pelicans have struggled through August because of an unproductive offense. The Birds are batting just .205/.275/.274 during the month to post a .548 OPS, far below their league-worst mark on the season of .634. Over the first 17 games of August, Myrtle Beach has mustered just 21 extra-base hits. The Pelicans are also a woeful 22-for-117 (.188) during the month with runners in scoring position, plating a total of 40 runs (2.4 per game) in August.

PELICAN POINTS

Jhonny Pereda's solo home run on Sunday was just the 51st of the year for the Birds, a mark that ranks last in the CL. Entering play Tuesday, the Birds are on pace for 57 bombs, inferior to that of the 64 Myrtle Beach hit in 2013, which sits as the current club record for fewest roundtrippers in a single season... The Pelicans are just 10-20 (.333) in their nearest 30 games, though they have won six of 10... California resident Tyler Alamo is 7-for-his-last-24 (.294).
