Potomac Nationals News Release
Lynchburg, VA - In a matchup of the top two teams in the Carolina League Northern Division standings, the Potomac Nationals (28-27, 65-57) dropped their series opener against the Lynchburg Hillcats (35-21, 64-59) by a final score of 7-2.
With LHP Anderson Polanco (W, 2-1) on the mound, the Hillcats scored three runs in both the fourth and sixth innings en route to the eventual 7-2 victory.
In the bottom of the fourth, LF Mitch Longo broke up a stretch of nine consecutive batters retired by Potomac RHP Jackson Tetreault (L, 0-1) with a one-out single into right field. The next batter, 3B Nolan Jones, opened the scoring with an RBI double off the wall in center. C Gavin Collins followed with a two-run home run (4) off of Tetreault to make it 3-0.
Potomac responded with a run in the next frame off of Polanco. RF Rhett Wiseman led off the inning with a triple and scored two batters later on an RBI groundout from LF Telmito Agustin.
Polanco allowed just the one run over his five innings of work, striking out five while allowing two hits. The lefty's second win of the season was his first since Lynchburg's opening day win over Down East on April 5th.
With the lead still at just two, Lynchburg crossed three more runs in the bottom of the sixth. Tetreault ran into tough luck, as Collins began the inning with a double that fell in between three P-Nat defenders in shallow center field. RF Trenton Brooks and DH Jose Medina followed with consecutive RBI base hits, a single and a triple respectively, to make it 5-1 and knock the Potomac starter out of the game. RHP A.J. Bogucki entered the game and tossed a wild pitch with SS Tyler Friis at the plate, allowing Medina to score from third.
In his second start as a Potomac National, Tetreault allowed six runs on on six hits, striking out two batters over 5.1 innings.
After Lynchburg added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth, Potomac started a rally in the top of the ninth. 1B David Masters, who reached on an error from Jones, scored from second on an infield single from C Jakson Reetz and Jones' second error of the inning. RHP Micah Miniard restored order and eventually closed out the ninth to lock down the 7-2 win.
Both sides return to action on Wednesday night for game two of the three-game series. RHP Kyle Johnston (4-1, 3.34) will take the ball for Potomac, looking to even the series. In his last appearance, Johnston picked up the win in his first relief appearance as a member of the Potomac Nationals. The P-Nats will take on Lynchburg LHP Tanner Tully (5-10, 4.47). Tully has notched wins in each of his last two starts.
First pitch at Calvin Falwell Field on Wednesday is set for 6:30pm. The Potomac broadcast will get underway at 6:15pm with the P-Nats Leadoff Show. You can listen to the Potomac broadcast at potomacnationals.com, at http://bit.ly/P-NatsBroadcast, or on the TuneIn Radio App.
