Mustangs Match Longest Losing Streak of Season with 4-3 Loss to Great Falls

GREAT FALLS, Mont. - The Billings Mustangs (21-21, 36-35) lost their fifth straight game on Sunday, falling 4-3 to the Great Falls Voyagers (17-15, 32-37) at Centene Stadium.

Luis Curbelo continued to stay hot at the plate for the Voyagers, picking up a one-out double in the first. Lency Delgado singled back up the middle with two outs to put Great Falls up 1-0 after the first inning.

The Mustangs tied things up in the second after Eric Yang was walked to lead off the inning. With two outs, Reniel Ozuna picked up his team-leading 35th RBI on a single to center to score Yang and even the game at 1-1.

Billings briefly took a lead in the third when Garrett Wolforth hit a solo home run. It was his first hit in the Pioneer League, making his second start in as many days in left field. Overall, it was Wolforth's sixth home run in his first season of professional baseball.

The Voyagers tied things up quickly as Curbelo delivered yet again. The third baseman hit a game-tying solo homer with two outs in the bottom of the third.

Justin McGregor became just the third Mustang pitcher to throw six complete innings in 2019. The right-hander threw six innings, allowing four runs on six hits, not issuing a walk and striking out five. It was a new career-high for McGregor in innings pitched.

Curbelo's second home run of the day, a two-run shot in the sixth put the Voyagers up by two for the first time on Sunday. Luis Curbelo now has seven hits and seven runs scored over his last two games, totaling 14 bases this weekend.

Alec Byrd delivered two shutout innings of relief to give the Mustangs a late chance as they put the tying run in scoring position in both the seventh and eighth.

Reniel Ozuna hit his team-best fifth triple with two outs in the seventh and scored on Jonathan Willems' RBI double to left-center. Ozuna was 2-for-4 with a triple, run scored and RBI while Willems went 2-for-4 with a double and RBI.

Great Falls' defense stranded four runners aboard over the last three innings to hold on for the win and keep themselves in the playoff picture.

The Mustangs' lead in the North Division is now 2.5 games with five left to play in the regular season.

The Mustangs and Voyagers will play for the final time in 2019 on Monday, Sept. 2. First pitch in the series finale is set for 4 p.m. MDT at Centene Stadium.
