Billings Mustangs News Release
BILLINGS, Montana - The Billings Mustangs (10-17) ended their three-game losing streak with a 6-1 win over the Grand Junction Rockies on Thursday in front of 2,548 at Dehler Park.
The Rockies would take an early lead on an error in the second inning. Franklin Garcia singled with one out and scored later after an errant throw into left field. That would be the only run of the game for the Rockies who managed just three hits over the final seven frames.
The pitching performance would be a group effort Thursday for Billings with six pitchers combining to strike out 17 batters; a new season-high. The longest outing of the night belonged to Connor Curlis (1-0), who tossed two and one-third innings of shutout relief. He would strike out four. The last time the Mustangs struck out 17 or more in a game was June of 2016 in an 8-2 win in Great Falls.
The Mustangs responded to the early deficit with five runs on five hits in the second. They would put 10 batters at the plate to knock Eris Filpo (2-3) out of the game after the second. Michael Spooner had his first professional hit in the inning, an RBI double to open the scoring. Carlos Rivero, Dylan Harris and Reshard Munroe would also single in runs.
That lead was extended with the sixth and final run of the game four innings later. Harris delivered an RBI double for his second hit of the night. He finished 2-for-5 to extend his hitting streak to four games. Pabel Manzanero saw his hit streak stretched to five when he singled in his last at-bat of the game.
Three Mustangs pitchers combined to strike out eight consecutive batters between the seventh and the ninth and would strike out 11 of 12 dating back to the fifth. Eddy Demurias and Dauri Moreta each had clean innings striking out the side.
The Mustangs can now vie for the series split Friday in the four-game finale. First pitch at Dehler Park is set for 7:05 p.m.
