Chicago Mustangs News Release
Hoffman Estates, IL- The Chicago Mustangs, proud members of the Major Arena Soccer League (www.MASLSoccer.com), defeated the St. Louis Ambush 5-4 at the Sears Centre Arena on Saturday.
In a very quick first quarter, the Mustangs tested St. Louis early but Ambush goalkeeper Greg Crook batted away a shot on a 1-on-1 breakaway leading to several chances for the Ambush that were turned away by Chicago goalkeeper Jesus Flores including a point-blank save that kept St. Louis off the board. The Ambush broke through first and scored with 8:38 left in the first quarter as forward Elvir Kafedzic took a pass off of an awkward bounce from forward Sinclair O'Daine and booted a goal just over the outstretched arms of Flores.
Just 8 minutes into the 2nd quarter the Mustangs answered back on the power play when Alexis Camarena took a pass from newcomer Matthew Stewart and blasted it past Crook to tie it up at 1. The goal was Camarena's first of the season. 2 minutes later the Ambush regained the lead as forward Blake Ordell received a ball off of the boards and chipped it in past Flores. St. Louis added to their lead on a penalty shot by Stefan St. Louis after a tripping penalty on Flores. At the end of the period, it appeared as if the Ambush had a sure breakaway goal with Flores playing out of his net but Miguel Vaca and Stewart were able to get back and make two huge plays to keep St. Louis out of the net. After the defensive stand, forward Hewerton Moreira tapped a blocked shot deflection by Crook just over the goal line for his second of the season to close the gap and make the score 3-2 Ambush.
The Mustangs came out with a similar energy in the 3rd quarter as they saw many opportunities but couldn't find a shot to even it up. In what appeared to be a carbon copy of the first period, the Ambush quickly answered with several opportunities of their own but couldn't put any of their chances on net. Chicago was able to capitalize on another power play opportunity as Wilo Martinez blasted a quick pass from freshly signed Semir Nesanovic from the right boards and over the unexpected hands of Crook for his 9th of the season. 3 minutes later, the Mustangs took their first lead of the game with some perfectly executed tic-tac-toe passing from Guillherme Vega to Wilo as he threaded a pass to Vaca for his 10th goal of the season.
The 4th quarter saw both teams crank up the intensity as they fought back and forth for momentum in a very physical quarter. The Ambush were able to tie the game 4-4 with 8:22 left when O'Daine went unchecked on an aggressive Flores deflection and headed the ball into an empty net. The Mustangs, however, quickly answered on a back pass from Wilo to Vaca to regain the lead 5-4 with under 8 minutes to go. The Ambush were awarded a free kick right in front of the Mustangs goal on the very next play but Flores was able to bat it away and maintain the lead. St. Louis brought in an extra attacker at the end of the game but were unable to tie it up as the Mustangs held off a final attack to hold onto the lead.
Offensive Player of the Game: Miguel Vaca, 2 goals
Defensive Player of the Game: Jesus Flores, 23 saves
