Sanford Mainers News Release

The Sanford Mainers could smell .500 again going into Thursday night's game against the Laconia Muskrats. They were 11-12 and have been under the even mark since facing the Saratoga Brigade back on June 29. The Muskrats, however, were able to hold off the Mainers and keep them under .500, defeating them 4-2.

The Muskrats got to Mainers starter EJ Ashworth early, plating three runs in the top of the first. Ashworth walked Joe Torres to start the game and then gave up a bunt single to Jordan Lee. Torres stole third and then scored on the sacrifice fly by Ryan McBroom. Tayor Drake then took the first pitch he saw in the next at bat and drove it to deep right-center field good enough for a double scoring Lee. After Drake advanced to third on a ground out by Jake Peevyhouse, he came in to score on a wild pitch to put the Muskrats up 3-0.

In the home half of the first, the Mainers answered with a run of their own when Sam Balzano singled to right, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Robert Wayman and then crossed the plate after Connor Castellano hit a bloop single to left.

The Mainers tried tying the game up again in the fifth, but came up short scoring only one run. With two outs to start the inning, Anthony Papio hit a line drive to right putting him on first and was followed by a single up the middle by Anthony Simon. Papio came around to score when Kyle Moore singled down the left field line. Simon was able to advance to third on the throw, but the two were stranded on the corners to end the inning.

In the top half the fifth the Muskrats scored again on a McBroom double down the left field line to score Lee who singled to start the inning.

The Mainers trailed 4-2 heading into the ninth inning. Nate LaPointe singled to start the inning, but was thrown out at second on the fielder's choice. Papio reached second later on a ground out by Simon, but was stranded there.

The Mainers will take on the Mystic Schooners at home on Friday night at 6:30pm. Conor Krauss is slated to get the start.
