North Adams SteepleCats News Release
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. - Newport scored six runs in the second inning, and that paved the way toward an eventual 9-0 blanking of North Adams in a cross-divisional NECBL showdown on Thursday night at Joe Wolfe Field.
Playing for the first time since last Saturday after back-to-back rainouts, the SteepleCats (10-13) fell back to three games under .500 and into fifth place in the Western Division, while the Gulls (15-8) move back into first place in the East after back-to-back victories.
Seven different Gulls finished with at least seven hits, as the visitors out-slugged North Adams, 16-5, on the night, led by a three-hit performance from 2012 SteepleCat Adrian English, while Joel McKeithan drove in a game-high three runs.
Sophomore Scott Squier (Hawaii) was tagged for a season-high six earned runs - seven total - and fell to 2-3 on the season despite an eight-strikeout performance. James Murly notched his third win of the year thanks to six three-hit, shutout innings during which he fanned three.
From there on out, the Gulls' bullpen took it from there, as Darin Gillies and Kyle McGrath went unharmed over the last three frames.
After a scoreless first, the game unraveled for Squier, who let in the game's first run on an RBI single off the bat of Brett Winger, part of three consecutive base hits to start the frame. But the southpaw was a strike away with two outs and the bases loaded from getting out of the jam, but wound up walking in a run and surrendered a pair of two-out, two-RBI doubles in back-to-back at-bats to break the game open.
From there on out, the SteepleCats were never quite able to recover, as McKeithan drove in one more run in the fourth before the Gulls tacked on two more in the sixth, as Ethan Ferreira and Winger tallied RBI hits midway through the game to round out the scoring display for the league's top offensive unit.
The SteepleCats continue their season-long four-game homestand tomorrow, July 12, hosting Saratoga for a doubleheader that features the conclusion of a suspended game from June 30. Trailing 3-0 in the top of the third in that contest, both sides will resume that game at 4 p.m., before a regulation, nine-inning contest follows 30 minutes afterward.
