Bay Sox Lose to Keene

July 11, 2013 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
New Bedford Bay Sox News Release

The New Bedford Bay Sox struggled to get anything going Thursday night at Alumni field as they fell to the Keene Swamp Bats 9-3.

The Bay Sox got the leadoff man on base six times, but couldn't get runners around the bases.

No Bay Sox player had more than one hit, and Alex Witkus (Fairfield) had two of the three RBIs.

Swamp Bats starter, and winning pitcher, Nathan Kirby (Virginia) allowed 1 run, 4 hits and stuck out 8 in 5 innings pitched.

After a rainout yesterday, Keene was ready to hit.

Matt Ford (Hofstra), JP Sportman (Central Connecticut St.), Brian O'Grady (Rutgers) and Steve Swingle (Grand Canyon) all had two hits. Swingle, O'Grady and Sportman all had two RBIs, and Sportman hit his second homer of the year.

New Bedford's starting pitcher Danny Tyson (Northwestern) lasted 1 inning, giving up 5 hits, 6 earned runs and 2 walks.

With the loss the Bay Sox have dropped four in a row for the first time all season.

The Swamp Bats pounced in the first inning forcing the Bay Sox to play from behind, something they have done all season. This time, the Bay Sox couldn't mount a comeback.

Dylan Moore (Cyprus College) and Ford led-off with back-to-back singles and Bay Sox starter Tyson lost the strike zone. Tyson walked the bases loaded and then walked a batter, and hit a batter to give Keene a 2-0 lead. With two outs, Swingle hit a bloop-single to left field to make it 4-0 after the first.

Keene added two more runs in the second on a similar inning. Moore and Ford had back-to-back singles and Sportman singled down the third base line to bring in Moore. Tyson was pulled and a passed ball by his replacement, Adam Fournier (Franklin Pierce) brought in Ford to make it 6-0.

The Swamp Bats continued swinging their hot bats in the bottom of the third.

A 2-out single by O'Grady scored Robbie Cafiero (Hofstra) to make it a 7-0 Keene lead.

New Bedford got a run in the top of the fourth without a hit.

Max Nogay (West Virginia) drew a leadoff walk. He moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on back-to-back groundouts. Nogay scored the Bay Sox second run in the top of the 6th on a Witkus infield single to deep short.

Keene added two more runs in the fifth inning to make it a 9-1 Swamp Bats lead. Sportman hit a solo home run to left, and Swingle had another 2-out RBI single.

New Bedford made it a 9-3 ball game on a wild pitch from Keene reliever Jordan Simons (Louisville) in the top of the sixth.

Simons pitched three innings in relief, and allowed two runs on two hits.

The Bay Sox are now 8-16 on the season. They head to Plymouth tomorrow for a doubleheader.
