Ocean State Waves News Release

WAKEFIELD, R.I. - In a game that featured nine combined errors, Plymouth was the more advantageous as the Pilgrims grabbed a 6-3 victory over Ocean State on Thursday night at Old Mountain Field.

The Waves (16-11) made four errors in the game and left 13 runners on base, while the Pilgrims (9-16) made five errors but made the most of 11 hits.

The Pilgrims were able to grab the early lead with a pair of runs in the third. Garrett Stubbs started the rally with a bunt single and advanced to second as the throw to first sailed wide. Plymouth eventually put runners on first and third with two outs and Andrew Santomauro delivered a broken-bat single that found its way through the left side to put the Pilgrims on the board. Ryan Stephens followed with a single to right-center to make it 2-0.

Ocean State threatened in the second and third against Plymouth starter Harrison Stanwyck but the big righty was able to work through trouble. Matt Burgess and Caden Bailey picked up back-to-back one-out singles in the second but Stanwyck ended the threat with a fly ball to left and a strikeout. In the third, Christian Muscarello singled and Mike Gerber doubled with two outs but Stanwyck got a ground ball to second to end the inning.

Plymouth opened up a six-run lead with two runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings. In the fifth, Stephens delivered an RBI single and Vin Guglietti made it 4-0 with a sac fly. In the sixth, Ryan Richardson scored on a wild pitch and Jacob Robson made it 6-0 with an RBI single through the right side.

The Waves were finally able to break through in the sixth as they scored two runs. Mike Gerber started the inning with a single to right and Chris King followed with a double into the left-center gap to score Gerber all the way from first. Bailey then added the second run with a solo home run down the right field line, his first of the summer.

In the seventh, the Waves put their first two runners on and scored a third run as the Plymouth first baseman bobbled a King grounder. The inning came to an abrupt halt, however, as Pat Quinn laced the first pitch he saw back through the middle but Stanwyck snared the liner and doubled the runner off of first.

It was more bad luck for the Waves in the eighth as they loaded the bases with one out against reliever Alex Farina. The right-hander escaped damage by inducing a pop up and a ground ball to short. The Waves made one final push in the ninth as Gerber drew a leadoff walk and Quinn drilled a pitch from reliever Travis Stout to deep right-center that appeared to leave the ballpark but it hit the top of the wall and the Pilgrims were able to nab Quinn at second. Stout then picked up his league-leading sixth save with a ground ball to second.

Making his third start of the summer, Liam O'Sullivan lasted 5.0 innings, allowing four runs (one earned) on six hits. He struck out two and did not walk a batter. O'Sullivan retired the first seven he faced before allowing two runs in the third. Connor Kelly worked 2.1 innings of relief, allowing two runs on four hits. Jared Habershaw then entered with one out and runners on second and third in the eighth and got the Waves out of the jam with a strikeout and a line out to second. He then struck out two in a scoreless ninth. Muscarello, Gerber and Bailey all picked up two hits in the Waves' 12-hit attack.

Ocean State will have an off day on Friday before continuing its four-game homestand on Saturday when Newport visits Old Mountain Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
