Omaha Storm Chasers News Release

OMAHA, NE - Donnie Murphy, who played for the Kansas City Royals in 2004-2005 without making a stop in Omaha, felt right at home Saturday night at Rosenblatt Stadium. The New Orleans shortstop went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI, leading the Zephyrs to a 6-3 win over the Omaha Royals in front of 2,986 fans and their canine companions on Bark in the Park night.

Murphy had an RBI single past a drawn in Wilson Betemit at short for Omaha in the fourth inning, scoring Hector Luna with the first run of the game. Luna had led off the inning with a double to right-center.

Royals third baseman Marc Maddox delivered a two-run double to the right-center field gap in the sixth, tying the game at 2-2 and chasing New Orleans starter Jorge Sosa. Taylor Tankersley (3-1) came on in relief and the lefty struck out both Alex Gordon and Scott Thorman to leave the go-ahead run at second base.

Murphy broke the 2-2 tie with two outs in the top of the seventh, smacking the first pitch he saw from Greg Holland (0-2) over the right field wall for a two-run homer. The Zephyrs tacked on two more runs in the eighth off Holland, who allowed four runs on five hits over one-and-two-thirds innings.

Two nights after being held to a season-low four hits in a 2-1 win - and one day after spending a long day of travel to arrive in Omaha late Friday night forcing the postponement of the series opener - the Zephyrs erupted for 14 hits. New Orleans could have won by a larger margin, but Z's batters were 1-for-15 with runners in scoring position, leaving 14 runners on base.

New Orleans pitchers, who entered the night with the PCL's worst team ERA at 5.50, allowed just five hits and five walks, striking out nine Omaha batters.

The Zephyrs (13-15) improve to 7-6 on the road. With the loss, the Royals (14-14) drop to 6-11 at home.

Game two of the abbreviated, three-game series is Sunday at 1:35 p.m. The pitching matchup has New Orleans righty Brad Stone (0-1, 3.00) facing Omaha right-hander Philip Humber (2-2, 4.25).

It's U.S. Bank Family FUNday, with clowns, face painting and balloon art. Subway Kids Club members get in FREE and following the game all kids are invited to run the bases with Casey, presented by Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church. Plus, it's a Nebraska College Savings Program "Hit the Books" day: kids who completed the Hit the Books reading program earned a ticket to the game. The day is also presented by KGBI 100.7 FM, Fox 42 and Family Spectrum Magazine.
