'Topes Survive Sounds, 15-12

In what turned out to be a run riot, the Albuquerque Isotopes (16-13) outlasted the Nashville Sounds (18-11) in a wild 15-12 Mother's Day win Sunday afternoon at Isotopes Park. The two teams' combined 25 runs and 34 hits mark new season-highs with 18 runs coming in the final three innings and 11 total tallies in the seventh frame alone.

Six ‘Topes collected multiple hits in the game with Chin-lung Hu leading the way with a 4-for-4 performance, while Jamie Hoffmann supplied four RBI. The ‘Topes, who scored 14 runs in last night's contest, have now scored 29 runs in the past two games after pushing across 11 total the previous five contests.

Albuquerque erupted for eight runs in the seventh inning to take a seemingly comfortable 15-5 lead, but Nashville fired back with six runs of its own in the top of the eighth to make it 15-11. The Isotopes held the Sounds to just one more, however, to hold on for the crazy victory.

Initially trailing 2-0, the ‘Topes plated seven unanswered runs starting with a five-run fifth. Hoffman started the scoring with an RBI triple to center and would come around to score and tie it up at 2-2 with a Hu single. Unwilling to settle for a tie, however, Timo Perez roped a single to right center to plate Hu and Russ Mitchell, who drew a walk earlier in the inning. Ivan De Jesus, Jr. capped the inning with an RBI single down the left field line to put the ‘Topes ahead 5-2.

Albuquerque added two more in the seventh to up its advantage to 7-2 thanks to an RBI double to left from De Jesus, Jr. and a single to left from Lucas May.

After allowing the two early Sounds runs, starter James McDonald (2-1) tossed three scoreless frames before allowing three straight batters to reach in the top of the seventh to prompt his exit. McDonald went six innings surrendering five runs and fanning six en route to his second victory of the year.

While Nashville plated three in the seventh, Albuquerque went on an utter rampage in their half of the frame, breaking out for eight runs. The ‘Topes tallied two with RBI singles from Prentice Redman and Timo Perez and added another on a bases loaded walk to reliever Jon Link. After J.D. Closser poked a single past third base for two more runs, Hoffmann added the finishing touch with a three-run blast to left for a 15-5 ‘Topes lead.

Nearly replicating the ‘Topes, Nashville scored six in the top of the eighth as six straight batters reached and scored to make it 15-11. The Sounds would add a solo home run in the ninth before Albuquerque's bullpen finally shut them down to preserve the 15-12 win.

Albuquerque will try for a series win on Monday with left-hander Scott Elbert (1-1, 3.97) taking the ball for the Isotopes against Nashville lefty Chuck Lofgre (4-1, 4.33) in a 12:05 PM start from Isotopes Park.

The Isotopes' short homestand against the Sounds wraps up with a School Day matinee with first pitch slated for 12:05 PM.
