Carolina Mudcats News Release

Chattanooga, TN --- Jay Bruce doubled against the left field wall to bring in the winning run as the Chattanooga Lookouts stunned the Carolina Mudcats in the season-series finale at AT&T Field on Tuesday night, winning 7-6.

The Mudcats entered the ninth three outs away from a four-game sweep, a six-game winning streak, and a one-game deficit in the North Division. However, a 6-5 lead somehow slipped away as the Lookouts used a two-out walk with the bases empty, then grand fortune to tie and ultimately defeat Carolina (7-9).

After working a perfect eighth inning, Scott Nestor (L, 1-3) fanned the first two batters of the ninth before walking Adam Rosales. Rosales swiped second base before Drew Anderson grounded what appeared to be the final out of the game toward first baseman Grant Psomas. The final low bounce before reaching Psomas caromed off of the base, kicking into the air over Psomas to inexplicably allow Rosales to score the tying run. Nestor was relieved by Chris Mobley, whose first pitch against top-prospect outfielder Jay Bruce smashed against the left field wall to score Anderson with the winning run.

Carolina sits three games behind first-place Chattanooga heading home to host Jacksonville on Independence Day.

Lee Mitchell hit his team-leading 15th homer in the fourth inning as Carolina overcame a 3-1 deficit. The bomb was Mitchell's fourth in five games.

Gaby Hernandez (4-7, 3.55) starts against Jacksonville's Justin Orenduff (4-2, 3.77) at 7:15 PM ET on Wednesday. The gates open at 5:30 PM ET to accommodate the expected sellout crowd. As of 3:00 PM Tuesday afternoon, only a few hundred general admission seats remained for the game.
