Mobile BayBears News Release

JACKSONVILLE, FL - A wild pitch in the bottom of the eighth inning gave Jacksonville the final run of Tuesday's game, in a 3-2 Suns win in front of 8,112 fans at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville. A.J. Shappi (1-3) suffered the loss for the BayBears. After retiring the first two Suns in the eighth, pinch hitter David Nicholson hit a slow rolling single to third base. Nicholson, who played on the same high school team as Shappi, scored the eventual winning run on the wild pitch two batters later.

The BayBears have now lost two straight games, dropping to third place, three games behind first place Jacksonville. The losing streak follows a season high eight game winning streak, which ended Monday night.

Ronnie Merrill started the BayBears scoring in the third inning, hitting a solo home run. It was Merrill's 10th home run of the season, and fourth in nine games played in Jacksonville. After RBI singles by Kevin Howard and Chin-Lung Hu gave the Suns a 2-1 lead, Justin Upton's sacrifice fly in the sixth inning tied the game. Upton finished 2-for-3 with an RBI on the night.

Brooks Brown started for the BayBears, and did not factor in the decision. Brown was struck by a line drive on his pitching arm, and had to leave the game with one out remaining in the fifth inning.

The BayBears take on in-division rival Montgomery Wednesday at 7:05 PM. Montgomery's starting pitcher is TBA, while the BayBears send LHP Greg Smith (5-3) to the mound.
