Carolina Mudcats News Release

Sevierville, TN --- The Carolina Mudcats were shut out for the third time this season, this time in the series opener against second-place Tennessee 5-0 on Saturday night before 6,143 fans at Smokies Park.

Dallas Buck (L, 2-1) suffered his first loss of the season, surrendering 12 hits over 6 2/3 innings. Tennessee (8-7) scored single runs in the first and second innings, with the latter scoring on a controversial call that led to the ejection of shortstop Zach Cozart.

The Smokies placed runners at second and third with one out and pitcher Casey Lambert batting. With a 1-2 count, Lambert hit a sinking liner into left-center, as centerfielder Michael Griffin dove for the ball and claimed he made the catch. First base umpire Craig Barron indicated that Griffin trapped the ball, and Steve Clevenger scored from third. The trailing baserunner Darwin Barney had advanced toward third on the hit, but apparently thought the ball was caught, so Barney ran back to second base, but Lambert was standing on second base. After a confusing rundown, Barney was tagged out and an argument ensued. Cozart was ejected for protesting on the call as manager David Bell ran onto the field. Replays showed conclusively that Griffin did make the catch.

Tennessee scored another run in the sixth and two more in the seventh against Buck.

Carolina, which has lost eight of 10, did not have a baserunner advance past first base until the final two innings, when the Mudcats (6-10) filled the bases in the final two frames. However, Carolina's rallies were snuffed out by Jeremy Papelbon and Blake Parker.

Travis Wood (0-2, 0.57) starts the series' second game on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 PM ET against James Russell (0-2, 9.69).
