Knoxville Smokies News Release
Sevierville, Tenn. - The Carolina Mudcats (36-24) took a 2-1 lead in the 4th inning on an Adrian Gonzalez 2-run home run and their pitching shut down Smokies (34-28) the rest of the way in a 3-1 win. Gonzalez doubled off Jeremy Lambert and scored on a sacrifice fly in the 9th inning to cap the scoring for Carolina. The win gives the Mudcats a three game lead on Tennessee with eight games remaining in the first half.
Todd Moser (4-2) scattered six Smokies hits and allowed a single run over six innings to pick up the win. Former Smokies pitcher Franklyn Gracesqui followed Moser and surrendered just one hit while striking out two in as many innings. Mike Flannery pitched a perfect ninth for his 9th save of the year.
Jason Isringhausen made his second rehabilitation start for the Smokies. The 30-year-old right-hander used just 9 pitches, all strikes to get through the first inning. Isringhausen allowed a one out bloop single to Drew Niles and struck out the final two batters he faced.
Papo Bolivar had his second three-hit night in a row and the Smokies only RBI when he knocked in Caonabo Cosme in the 3rd inning. Joe Girardi made his third rehab appearance behind the plate. Girardi went 1-for-2 with a single and was hit by a pitch in the 5th. The major leaguer also caught seven innings for the second straight night.
The Smokies host Greenville for a four game series beginning Monday. Rick Ankiel (1-3, 9.38) is slated to start against Bubba Nelson (4-5, 3.82) on $1 hot dog night.
