Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release
MOBILE, Ala. â The Suns and Mobile BayBears completed their doubleheader Sunday, continuing the suspended second game in which Mobile won, 15-9, over the Suns at Hank Aaron Stadium.
The game was called after six innings early Sunday morning in compliance with the Southern League curfew. It was resumed beginning with the seventh inning at 6 p.m. CT Sunday, preceding the regularly scheduled Suns-BayBears game. The continuation lasted three minutes â the Suns were retired in order.
In the nightcap, Mobile (25-34) scored five runs off Suns starter Alfredo Gonzalez in the first inning. Gonzalez (1-2) gave up a three-run home run to Jon Knott, who smashed his league-leading 14th round-tripper. Two Suns errors behind Gonzalez allowed the BayBears' lead to swell.
The Suns (26-34) showed resiliency, scoring twice off BayBears starter Duncan McAdoo in the second. Derek Michaelis scored Nick Alvarez on a single and Gonzalez's groundout scored Michaelis. Alvarez's RBI fielder's choice in the third inning pulled Jacksonville to within 5-3.
The momentum swung back in favor of Mobile when Gonzalez allowed four runs in the bottom of the third. Yamid Haad's two-run double started the inning in which the BayBears batted around. Mobile sent all nine batters to the plate in the first, third and fourth innings.
Suns reliever Will McCrotty struck out Rico Washington with two on to end the threat, but allowed five runs in the fourth inning. Haad hit another two-run double to propel the offense. Haad had one RBI prior to the game.
McAdoo (2-2) earned the win, going five innings and leaving with a 12-run lead after Bobby Scales' solo home run off Ryan Minor in the bottom of the fifth. The Suns cut the deficit in half with a six-run sixth inning off BayBears relievers Brad Baker and Chris Rojas.
Baker walked Mike Collins with the bases loaded â one of five walks in the inning â and then allowed a two-run single to Victor Diaz. Michaelis smacked a two-run single off Baker, which ended his night. Rojas delivered a passed ball off Washington's glove, scoring Alvarez. Tony Socarras, who pinch-hit for Minor earlier in the inning, batted for the second time but struck out with the bases loaded. The Suns stranded the bases loaded twice in the game and have lost 10 of their last 12 games.
In game one of the doubleheader, BayBears starter Cory Stewart retired the first 17 Suns in order and, with help from the bullpen, took a no-hitter into the seventh inning in a 1-0 victory on Saturday in front of 5,153 fans.
Stewart (5-4) walked pinch-hitter B.J. Waszgis with two outs in the sixth inning. Until Waszgis reached base, the BayBears had retired 28 Suns in a row, dating back to the sixth inning Sunday. Stewart walked the bases loaded and was relieved by Bryan Gaal. Gaal struck out Diaz to end the threat.
Michaelis a one-out, groundball single to right field in the seventh off reliever Rusty Tucker to break up the BayBears' no-hit bid. Brennan King followed with a single, but the Suns stranded both runners as Tucker earned his 16th save.
Suns starter Edwin Jackson (2-4) earned the loss despite allowing one run over five innings. He fanned eight, but allowed a bases-loaded RBI single to Khalil Greene in the first inning to give Mobile a 1-0 lead. Jackson settled down to retire the next 13 hitters.
The game began one hour and 32 minutes late because of a rain delay.
Right-hander Joel Hanrahan (6-2, 2.32 ERA) is scheduled to face BayBears lefty Roger Deago (4-3, 4.59) in the regularly scheduled, nine-inning game, set to begin at approximately 7:05 CT.
