Sevierville, Tenn.- Carolina used s four run sixth inning to pull away from Tennessee en route to a 5-2 win Thursday night at Smokies Park.
Tied at 1, the Mudcats scored four runs against three different Tennessee pitchers in the sixth, highlighted by a bases loaded single from Jason Hill that scored two. Enrique Gonzalez (9-8) allowed 11 hits over 5 2/3 innings for the loss.
Tennessee led early, when Dan Uggla's groundout scored Noochie Varner in the first inning against Adam Bostick (4-1). Carolina, though, would turn three double plays, and Bostick held Tennessee to just one hit over five innings for the win.
The second game of the series is Friday night at 7:15. RHP Dustin Nippert (6-3, 2.73) will start for Tennessee, with LHP Ray Aguilar (4-0, 2.40) getting the call for Carolina.
