Mudcats Split Pair with P-Nats Behind Naquin Slam

Zebulon, N.C. - The Carolina Mudcats split a doubleheader Tuesday night at Five County Stadium with the Potomac Nationals. Carolina (21-43) walloped Potomac (37-26) 11-3 in game one before falling 3-1 in game two. Tyler Naquin's grand slam highlighted a three-homer barrage by the Mudcats in game one.

Cody Anderson (6-3) picked up the win in game one after tossing a one-hit shutout over five innings. The P-Nats' heralded right-hander, Black Schwartz (5-2) was chased after only one inning. Schwartz allowed five runs on five hits.

Game one began with an offensive showing by Carolina. Jerrud Sabourin crushed a three-run homer over the right field wall for a 3-0 lead. The blast was his third of the season. Jordan Smith followed with a singled, and scored on an error. Bo Greenwell doubled off the wall, and the throw from right was dropped by the second baseman, allowing Smith to score. With two out, Zack MacPhee singled to right. Greenwell scored from second to cap the inning.

In the third inning, Greenwell singled with one out. Back-to-back walks by Tony Wolters and Paddy Matera set up Naquin's grand swing for a 9-0 advantage. Joey Wendle followed one out later with a majestic blast over the right field wall, and a 10-0 lead.

Naquin scored on an error and a wild pitch in the fifth for an 11-0 advantage. Potomac struck for three in the sixth on a pair of home runs.

The Nationals rebounded to hold the Mudcats to their lowest hit total of the season in game two. Robbie Ray (5-2) hurled a complete game, two-hitter. Paddy Matera broke up the shutout with a moonshot to left in the fifth.

Starter Nick Pasquale dropped to 0-4 after his three innings of work in the nightcap. He allowed a run on four hits.
