Winston-Salem Dash News Release
DASH WASTE FIVE-RUN LEAD MONDAY
Winston-Salem jumped out to a 7-2 lead through three innings, but Lynchburg rallied to plate eight of the final 10 runs of the contest for a 10-9 victory over the Dash on Monday night inside BB&T Ballpark. The Hillcats plated runs in the fourth (4), fifth (1), sixth (1) and seventh (2) to take a 10-8 lead. Winston mustered a run in the bottom of the ninth but stranded the possible tying run at first base. Lynchburg is now 7-2 against the Dash in 2013, a record that includes wins in four of the five games played the Triad.
NO SEVENTH HEAVEN IN WINSTON
Winston-Salem's season-long six-game winning streak came to an end Monday night. Winston-Salem outscored its opposition 46-17 during the run, which was the longest home win streak since the BB&T Ballpark-record nine-game streak from August 2-25, 2012. The Dash boast full-season Minor League Baseball's best home record since BB&T Ballpark opened prior to the 2010 season (154-91, .629).
HOMER HAPPY
For the fourth time this season, the Dash hit three home runs in a game on Monday. Courtney Hawkins capped a four-run first with a two-run bomb. Chris Curley clubbed a two-run dinger of his own to dead center one frame later. Grant Buckner gave the Dash their final lead of the series opener with a solo blast in the fifth. This season, the Dash have gone yard 56 times, which is one long ball shy of Frederick for the Carolina League lead. Winston-Salem is the lone club with two players who have hit more than 10 homers: Hawkins (12) and Curley (11).
COMEBACK 'CATS
The Dash spoiled a five-run lead, the largest advantage Winston-Salem has surrendered in a loss since August 31, 2011. In that game, the Dash stormed out to a 7-1 cushion before Salem roared back for a 16-10 win. Before Monday, the largest lead that the Dash had wasted was three runs on April 25 against Lynchburg (15-8).
ONE GAME DOWN WITH SIX TO GO
The Dash have dropped a game behind first-place Myrtle Beach in the Southern Division standings with six days remaining in the first half. The Pelicans won their fourth game in a row Monday by edging Frederick 2-1 behind All-Star Nick Martinez's eight-inning, one-run outing. The Dash finish with two games against Lynchburg (2-7) and four at Wilmington (9-1), while Myrtle Beach wraps up with two more versus Frederick (6-3) and five games in four days at home against Carolina (8-1).
DeMICHELE'S DOUBLE DIGITS
Dash infielder Joey DeMichele has hit safely in 10 consecutive games dating back to June 2. During this run, the former Arizona State product is hitting .381 (16-for-42) with three RBIs and seven runs scored. Dating back to May 26, he has hit safely in 16 of 18 games and raised his overall batting average 61 points to .248. DeMichele is the fourth Winston-Salem hitter to put together a hitting streak of 10 or more games, a claim that no other CL club can make.
FLYING HIGH
Winston-Salem outfielder Courtney Hawkins is hitting .308 (12-for-39) with five homers and 14 RBIs in his 10 games since returning from a month-long stint on the shelf (left shoulder). Hawkins has hit 12 homers in 118 at-bats over 33 games, which calculates to one homer every 9.8 at-bats. Among minor league hitters with 10 or more home runs, Hawkins owns the lowest at-bats per home run ratio.
DASH DOTS
Dash starter Chris Bassitt is 1-2 with a 7.11 ERA in his last five outings after going 4-0 with a 1.71 ERA in the first eight starts of his season...Catcher Kevan Smith (concussion) was placed on the disabled list, the White Sox announced Tuesday morning...Smith was hitting .258 with seven homers and 36 RBIs (eighth in the CL)...In a corresponding move, Brent Tanner was promoted to Winston from Low-A Kannapolis.
